Analysis of 35,800 Creator videos shows the gap between exposure and attention—and why Brands and Creators should anchor pricing and performance on engaged views

NEW YORK, Aug. 21, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Agentio, the AI-native platform for Creator-led advertising, today released new research estimating that public view counts on YouTube long-form videos could run approximately 30% higher than engaged views after the platform changes how it counts views on August 24, 2026. The analysis of 35,800 YouTube Creator videos from June through July 2026 shows how the new public metric will measure exposure from the first frame, while “engaged views” will continue to reflect viewers who choose to keep watching.

The change standardizes view counting across YouTube formats: long-form and live videos will join Shorts in recording a view as soon as playback begins. YouTube’s analytics, retention metrics and Partner Program earnings will remain anchored on the newly renamed “engaged views,” making it the more consistent measure of attention for Creator advertising.

Key findings include:

Long-form public views could rise approximately 30%. Using a 30-second engagement threshold as a directional proxy, Agentio estimates public views will run about 30% above engaged views. At more conservative 25- and 20-second thresholds, the modeled gap is 24% and 17%, respectively. The increase will not be uniform. The anticipated lift is 32.4% for micro channels, 28.1% for mid channels and 26.6% for macro channels, suggesting smaller Creators may see the largest change in their public numbers.Shorts show how far exposure and attention can diverge. Shorts adopted first-frame view counting in 2025. Across 550 organic Shorts in Agentio’s dataset, reported views were 65% higher than engaged views.Creator category matters. At the assumed 30-second threshold, Technology and Fitness show the largest modeled lift at 36.5% each, while Gaming shows the smallest at 27.0%.The economics do not change. Creator earnings, YouTube’s internal analytics, and Agentio’s pricing and reporting remain based on engaged views.

“YouTube’s change gives the market a consistent exposure metric across formats, but exposure and attention are not interchangeable,” said Arthur Leopold, co-founder and CEO of Agentio. “Brands need to know which number sits behind every benchmark, rate card, and CPM conversation. Creator media should be priced and measured on the attention audiences actually give it—which is why Agentio has always anchored on engaged views.”

The research cautions that the public counter and the engaged-view metric will effectively create two records for every video. Public views will remain visible on the watch page, while engaged views will live in YouTube Studio and permissioned channel-level reporting. Brands relying on public counts alone may therefore compare pre- and post-change videos on different baselines or misprice Creator inventory.

Agentio recommends that Brands recalibrate before-and-after comparisons, specify whether agreements and benchmarks use views or engaged views, and anchor pricing and performance measurement on engaged views. Creators should use YouTube Studio to track engaged views and proactively clarify the metric used in Brand negotiations.
