A recent offer to a Meta engineer totals $900,000, as the Palo Alto social AI company recruits for its lean team.
PALO ALTO, Calif., Oct. 2, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — CHAI, the social AI company backed by CoreWeave and AMD Ventures, today detailed its compensation approach for engineering hires: typical offers worth 1.5 times a candidate’s current total compensation, paid in cash as salary and bonuses, with the choice to exchange part of the salary for stock options.
In a recent offer, an engineer earning $600,000 in total compensation at Meta was offered a $600,000 annual base salary plus $300,000 in bonuses at CHAI. The $900,000 cash package represents a 50% increase. The base salary alone matches the engineer’s entire previous compensation package.
The offer comes from a company that reports a $120 million annualized revenue run-rate with 15–20 employees. As of October 1, 2026, CHAI reported $55 million raised to date, positive unit economics and profitability excluding sales and marketing spending. These figures are company-reported and unaudited; the run-rate extrapolates current revenue to a full year. (Source: CHAI company facts.)
“We want joining CHAI to be a clear step forward—for someone’s work, their finances and their family,” said William Beauchamp, founder and CEO of CHAI. “A small team gives engineers real responsibility and the chance to learn from each other. Our compensation should give them the same clarity about what the opportunity means.”
CHAI’s typical compensation package comprises approximately 75% base salary and 25% bonuses. Its bonuses are sign-on and retention payments, rather than payments tied to performance ratings. Sign-on bonuses are not clawed back. Individual offers can use a different salary-and-bonus split, as the recent Meta example illustrates.
The structure also looks beyond the first year. CHAI says second-year compensation is often equal to or higher than first-year compensation. Retention bonuses form part of that approach, helping the company make continuing with the team financially attractive.
That longer-term view is relevant as technology pay structures evolve. Levels.fyi’s analysis of front-loaded equity vesting describes how some companies place more of an initial stock grant in earlier years, with later compensation increasingly dependent on performance-based refresher grants.
For market context, Levels.fyi’s U.S. Meta software engineer data, accessed October 2, 2026, lists approximately $752,000 in annual total compensation at E6, including roughly $276,000 in base salary and $431,000 in stock. The figures show how much of a big-tech package can sit outside base salary. They provide a market benchmark; the recent CHAI offer is a company-reported individual example.
Engineers who want to participate in CHAI’s future ownership can choose to exchange part of their salary for stock options at a reasonable price. The choice lets each person balance cash compensation with potential future upside.
The opportunity extends to the work itself. CHAI engineers build conversational models, model-serving infrastructure and the consumer product, with direct ownership of problems and day-to-day opportunities to learn alongside colleagues. Their work reaches more than one million daily users, connecting research and engineering decisions with measurable changes in the product. (Source: CHAI company facts.)
CHAI’s approach brings together a growing business, a small team where individual contributions matter, and compensation that helps experienced engineers make the move with confidence.
