New research from BioBrain Insights, based on 10,000+ consumer responses, finds that while AI adoption is becoming routine, consumers remain cautious about giving AI independent authority over important decisions.

WILMINGTON, Del., Oct. 7, 2026 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — BioBrain Insights, a consumer intelligence and market research company, today announced the release of The AI Trust Gap: What Consumers Trust, Question, and Reject in an AI-First World, a new study examining how consumers use AI, what drives trust and distrust, and how much decision-making authority they are willing to give AI.

“The AI trust gap is the gap between using AI and giving it authority,” said Aditya Raj, Co-Founder & CEO, BioBrain Insights. “Consumers embrace AI for help, but as stakes rise, they still want human judgment, accountability, and oversight.”

Based on more than 10,000 consumer survey responses, the study finds a clear gap between AI adoption and AI authority. While consumers are increasingly comfortable using AI for everyday tasks, their willingness to let AI make important decisions remains conditional.

Key findings from The AI Trust Gap include:

AI adoption is becoming routine: 45% of consumers use AI-powered tools daily, while 43% say they are excited about AI and want to use more of it.Human oversight remains important: 37% say human review of important decisions would make them more willing to trust AI, while 40% prefer AI decisions to be reviewed by a human.Consumers are more comfortable with AI assistance than AI authority: Writing and summarizing are among the use cases consumers are most comfortable relying on AI for, while healthcare, employment, finance, and other high-stakes decisions generate stronger expectations for human involvement.Privacy and accuracy remain major trust barriers: 51% of recorded AI distrust responses center on privacy risks and incorrect or made-up information.AI trust differs across consumer groups: Generation, gender, and education influence how consumers use AI, how much they trust it, and where they draw the line on AI decision-making.

“The AI trust gap is not a gap between consumers and AI adoption. It is a gap between using AI and giving AI authority,” said Aditya Raj, Co-Founder & CEO, BioBrain Insights. “Consumers are increasingly comfortable asking AI for help, but when the stakes rise, they still want human judgment, accountability, and oversight.”

Understanding the AI Trust Gap

The findings suggest that consumer trust in AI is not determined simply by whether people use the technology. As AI moves from assisting consumers to influencing consequential decisions, expectations around human oversight, transparency, privacy, accuracy, and accountability become increasingly important.
