Ensono Research Uncovers Positive Outlook for Women in Tech in Annual Speak Up Survey

The survey found 85% of respondents believe hybrid work increases opportunities for women in the tech sector, despite critical challenges companies must address in 2024

DOWNERS GROVE, Ill., Feb. 22, 2024 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — Ensono, an expert technology advisor and leading managed services provider, released today the results of its fourth annual Speak Up survey, uncovering biases related to women in technology. The survey highlights a growing optimism among women in the tech sector, with 93% reporting improvements in equity and inclusion, largely driven by the flexibility of hybrid work models and expanded learning opportunities.

This year’s Speak Up survey emphasizes the crucial role of work flexibility in retaining and advancing women in the tech sector. The findings show that 97% of women in hybrid or in-person roles appreciate benefits like enhanced work-life balance and stronger colleague relationships. Moreover, 85% believe remote work provides greater career advancement opportunities. While significant progress has been made in gender equity, particularly in technology fields, women still face notable challenges that need addressing to sustain this positive trajectory, including:

73% of all respondents agree that they absorbed more responsibilities than their male colleagues after reductions in workforce in 2023.26% of hybrid and in-person respondents said they have felt uncomfortable or unsafe due to microaggressions or other forms of discrimination with in-person work, up from 20% compared to Ensono’s 2022 Speak Up findings.51% of respondents struggle to balance caregiving responsibilities with in-person work. This number climbs to 62% for women in India, compared to 40% in the U.K. and 50% in the U.S.

Additional key findings from the 2024 Speak Up survey include:

The AI empowerment effect: Generative AI’s overwhelming presence has exposed a new opportunity for many women in tech to advance their careers, mentor teams, and provide necessary leadership. More than a third (35%) of respondents said mostly female colleagues have led trainings and discussions around generative AI at their organizations, and 73% of women have female mentors at work who provide guidance and expertise on generative AI — a percentage that jumps to 89% for women in India (compared to 58% in the U.K. and 72% in the U.S.).Shifting employee expectations: With nearly a fifth (19%) of women in tech planning to leave their current companies over the next year, retention is a top priority. While opportunities for learning and development were crucial to women in both 2022 and 2023, priorities have shifted away from having better pay and benefits to having a more impactful voice in decision-making and greater flexibility.Gen Z in the workplace: As employees from Gen Z continue their march on becoming the majority of the modern workplace, understanding their workplace preferences is crucial for retention strategies. Only 36% of Gen Z respondents plan to stay at their company for more than two years and 50% of Gen Z want to have a more impactful voice in decision-making, showcasing that younger employees want to advance in their careers. In addition, Gen Z is the most likely to miss the social interaction and camaraderie of in-person work (77% agree), making a case for in-person workplace opportunities for younger employee groups.

Ensono surveyed 1,500 female-identifying, full-time professionals in the technology industry from the United States, United Kingdom, and India to better understand the experiences of women working in the tech industry.

REMADE Announces $4.86M in New Technology Research to Increase Materials Recovery, Remanufacturing & Recycling in U.S. Manufacturing

Institute Selects 10 Projects in Latest Round of Funding

ROCHESTER, N.Y., July 23, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — The REMADE Institute, a 150-member public-private partnership established in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) with an initial investment of $140 million, today announced $4.86 million in new technology research, selecting 10 new research demonstration, verification and validation (DV&V) projects as part of the Institute’s latest round of funding.

REMADE’s new DV&V projects will demonstrate tools and technologies that are at Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 6 and will reach TRL 7 by the end of their project. Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs) describe the various phases of technology development, with TRLs 4-7 typically referred to as the “Valley of Death” — the critical gap between early-stage research and commercial viability where promising innovations often fail to transition from the laboratory to the marketplace.

These new DV&V projects will not only address the Valley of Death for these technologies but will also increase U.S. manufacturing competitiveness; strengthen the resilience of the domestic supply chain; decrease manufacturing energy consumption; and advance the Circular Economy by increasing the reuse, remanufacturing, recovery, and recycling of critical minerals and rare earth elements, aluminum, textiles, electronics scrap, diesel engine blocks, steel, and paper.

“By focusing REMADE’s investment on these projects, we are getting closer and closer to fully commercializing these novel technology solutions, which once fully implemented are capable of achieving significant positive energy, manufacturing, environmental, and economic impacts for us as a nation,” said REMADE Chief Executive Officer Nabil Nasr.

This latest round of investment, the Institute’s seventh, is cost-shared between REMADE and the funding recipients. Of the 10 new projects, some involve new partners for REMADE. They will join the Institute’s existing partners, including industry innovators and academic researchers with Caterpillar, John Deere, Michelin, Nike, Adidas, MIT, RIT, Honda, Volvo, Yale University and many more.

REMADE Chief Technology Officer Magdi Azer said it’s important for research institutes like REMADE to provide ongoing investment in technologies to ensure they advance through the Valley of Death, noting that REMADE had previously funded six prior Requests for Proposals (RFPs).

“This is exactly why the Manufacturing USA institutes were established in the first place more than a decade ago,” Azer said. “These new DV&V projects will, for example, explore better ways to recover total rare earth oxides from electronic scrap; utilize computer vision and AI to reduce the cost of electronics recycling; recover and recycle aerospace and automotive aluminum; repair diesel engine blocks; use secondary steel to produce new tires; improve paper recycling; expand textile recycling; and increase the circularity of new product designs.”
