World-class innovators: Florida Poly professors among top 2% scientists globally

Published

on

LAKELAND, Fla., Dec. 4, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — Building on their continued global recognition, three Florida Polytechnic University professors have once again been named to an elite list of the top 2% of scientists in the world, highlighting their significant work in nanotechnology, critical rare earth element recovery, and electronics and electrical engineering.

The annual list compiled by Stanford University ranks researchers based on the number of articles published and the citations the articles receive, emphasizing the impact of their work rather than its volume.

Dr. Ajeet Kaushik, Dr. Muhammad Rashid, Dr. Patrick Zhang are esteemed authorities in their academic fields, continually advancing the world’s body of scientific knowledge through their consistent publications. Each has previously earned recognition on the prestigious list, celebrated for both their lifetime contributions and their recent research achievements over the past year.

“We are extraordinarily proud of these faculty members and their determination to stay on the bleeding edge of technological advancements in their fields,” said Dr. Devin Stephenson, Florida Poly’s president. “Our University’s commitment to excellence is reflected in their accomplishments, and I’m confident these remarkable professors will continue making great contributions to science while providing an exceptional education to their students.”

Dr. Patrick Zhang
As director of research at the University’s Florida Industrial and Phosphate Research Institute (FIPR), Zhang has elevated the nation’s understanding and capabilities in the recovery of critical rare earth elements (REEs) from phosphate and the wastes and byproducts of its mining.

“I feel honored and humbled. I really believe our research is having an impact nationally and internationally,” he said. “Recovering rare earths from phosphate plays an important part in the recovery of these critical materials from unconventional resources.”

The U.S. imports more than 80% of its REEs and critical minerals. Zhang’s research stands to transform that by creating new ways for robust domestic production of REEs, necessary for modern technology such as smartphones, wind turbines, solar panels and electric vehicles.

Dr. Ajeet Kaushik
Kaushik is an assistant professor of chemistry in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Kaushik’s research interests include sensors and biosensors, electrochemistry, and green and sustainable chemistry. He currently is exploring electrochemical sensors for health and environmental management.

“I’m making sensors that can do the job of detecting markers of concerns, which could indicate disease, infection, or environmental exposure,” Kaushik said. “My sensors are aligning with fifth- and sixth-generation sensing systems, so they’re small, smart, and can perform work wherever needed.”

Kaushik said his inclusion on the list of top scientists means greater opportunities become available to students who want to participate in high-level research, and to his peers as more disciplines are incorporated into his work.

Dr. Muhammad Rashid
Rashid is interim chair and professor in the Department of Electrical, Computer and Cybersecurity Engineering. He has long been regarded as a foremost expert in his field, writing seminal textbooks used by universities around the world. His two most recent books were published in 2024, and two others will be released in 2025.

“I try to work all the time; I want to share my ideas with people around the globe,” he said. “I have been fortunate to be able to do so much.”

Earlier this semester, Rashid was recognized as a Top Scholar by Scholar GPS, meaning he was in the top 0.5% of scholars worldwide. ScholarGPS is an online source for the analysis of scholarly activity.

By

TUCSON, Ariz., Oct. 20, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Delta Development Team (DDT), a leader in prehospital blood storage and cold chain technology, and The Good Drone Company (GDC) have been awarded a U.S. Army contract to develop a drone-based blood delivery capability for the Army Blood Link (ABL) program.

The program is part of the broader Armed Services Blood Program (ASBP), which supplies blood products to U.S. military forces worldwide. Army Blood Link is designed to support battlefield medical logistics through rapid, temperature-controlled delivery of lifesaving blood products to the field, providing an additional resupply option when traditional ground transportation is unavailable, delayed, or unsafe. Under the contract, The Good Drone Company will provide two U.S.-built prototypes of its hybrid vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) cargo drone, each designed to transport up to six units of blood, while DDT will provide the temperature-controlled storage capability through its Delta ICE 2L Smart Blood Cooler.

The companies are combining commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) technologies to create a U.S.-sourced aerial blood delivery system capable of transporting blood directly to the point of need.

To meet ABL program requirements, DDT will supply six Delta ICE 2L Smart Blood Coolers, each designed to maintain two units of blood within the required temperature range for three hours of aerial delivery in high-humidity environments with ambient temperatures ranging from 15°F to 120°F. Built-in temperature monitoring and data recording, along with Bluetooth and cellular connectivity, support cold-chain oversight and blood accountability. The program extends DDT’s blood storage and monitoring capabilities into aerial delivery.

“Getting blood to the point of need is only part of the challenge. It must also remain within the required temperature range throughout the journey,” said Montgomery Leija, CEO of Delta Development Team. “This program brings DDT’s experience in blood storage and cold chain management into a new operational environment, taking the blood supply chain from the ground to the air.”

The prototype system is designed to deliver blood within 10 meters of a designated target during both day and night operations. It will feature a communications range of up to 30 miles and semi-autonomous waypoint navigation. It is intended for single-person operation with minimal training and is built on GDC’s existing commercial cargo drone technology to accelerate development and fielding while meeting U.S.-sourcing requirements.

“We have seen strong interest in middle-mile drones in emerging markets for some time, from both public and private sector customers spanning healthcare to third-party logistics,” said Jake Vander Ploeg, CEO of The Good Drone Company. “This program is a great example of how the military is adopting commercial technology like our cargo drones to quickly test new ideas in the field without starting a full aircraft development program.”

The collaboration combines GDC’s expertise in commercial drone platforms and aerial delivery with DDT’s temperature-controlled blood storage and transport capabilities to support:

Rapid resupply: Delivering blood when conventional ground transportation is unavailable or unsafe.Cold chain protection: Maintaining required blood temperatures during aerial transport.U.S.-sourced capability: Supporting domestic defense supply chain objectives.Accelerated development: Combining GDC’s existing commercial cargo drone technology with DDT’s established blood storage solutions.

The ABL effort addresses the challenge of delivering critical medical supplies in contested and austere environments. When terrain, damaged infrastructure, or tactical conditions prevent conventional resupply, aerial delivery combined with temperature-controlled storage can expand options for getting lifesaving blood products to service members when and where they are needed.
