Women are Fleeing Social Media Platforms, Citing “Hostile Environment”

Results show women are seeking women-only spaces for learning, connection and safety

AUSTIN, Texas, March 3, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — A comprehensive new survey of over 1,000 U.S. women reveals a dramatic shift in social media usage patterns. In the past year, 66% of women took breaks from social media platforms, and nearly half (48%) completely abandoned at least one platform. They are leaving because of experiences of direct harassment and security concerns.

The survey, conducted by Uplevyl, a female-forward technology platform, uncovered several key trends in how women navigate social media platforms:

Mass Platform Exodus

Over half of women selected either both misinformation and poor quality or specifically identified one or the other as a primary concern.48% stopped using at least one social media platform24% of women completely stopped using Twitter/X in the past yearMental health/wellness impact (48%) and time management (46%) are among the top reasons for reducing usage

Rising Security and Harassment Concerns

Only 8% feel their personal data is “completely protected” on social platformsOver 6 in 10 women reported experiencing both direct harassment and security issues or identified one or the other as a primary concern43% would pay an average monthly fee of $25 for guaranteed personal data protection

Trust Varies Significantly by Platform

Twitter/X and Facebook ranked as the least trustworthy platforms, while LinkedIn (64%) is viewed as a trustworthy platformOnly 10% of women consider conversations on Twitter/X completely truthfulAcross all social media platforms, less than 30% of women make public-facing posts and comments

High Levels of Interest in Women-Only Spaces

The survey also explored reasons for women-specific online spaces:

46% cite the ability to discuss specific topics as the main benefit44% value feeling safe sharing personal contentOver 4 in 10 women cited both the importance of professional networking and mentorship opportunities or indicated one or the other

“The fact that nearly half of the women are stepping back from social media is not just a statistic – it’s a clear signal that current platforms are failing to create safe, supportive and uplifting spaces for women. These numbers speak to extreme levels of harassment and privacy breaches,” said Shubhi Rao, founder and CEO of Uplevyl. “Our research confirmed what we’ve long suspected: women need technology intentionally designed for them. This isn’t just about creating another platform; it’s about fundamentally rethinking  the role of technology in information dissemination and relationship building.”

Jacki Zehner, UP’s Chief Engagement Officer adds, “We believe that by building transparent, respectful, and community-driven technology, we can help reverse the trend of women feeling forced to choose between digital connection and their wellbeing and safety. “

PAUL, Minn., Oct. 19, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — 3M (NYSE: MMM) today announced a collaboration with Genius Electronic Optical Co., Ltd. (GSEO, Taiwan: 3406), an optical technology company, to advance technology development and manufacturing for 3M’s Expanded Beam Optical (EBO) solutions. In support of these efforts, 3M expects to make a strategic investment to acquire approximately 4.7% of GSEO’s common shares as part of the company’s private placement of newly issued shares, subject to customary closing conditions.

The collaboration brings together 3M’s EBO technology leadership, optical interconnect expertise, materials science, manufacturing scale and customer relationships with GSEO’s precision optics manufacturing capabilities and production scale. Together, the companies aim to support EBO commercialization and long-term capacity expansion to meet growing demand from hyperscale data centers and other advanced connectivity applications.

NEW ORLEANS, Oct. 19, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Scott Vicknair Personal Injury Lawyers is excited to announce the return of its second annual Operation Fur-Ever Home, a free community pet adoption event taking place on Saturday, November 14, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Lafreniere Park in Metairie, Louisiana.

The free, family-friendly event will give attendees the opportunity to meet adoptable pets from local animal shelters, learn about responsible pet ownership, and potentially welcome a new furry companion into their homes. Those who preregister for the event will also be entered for a chance to win a Soundcore speaker and a free pet adoption.

We wanted to create another opportunity to make those connections while supporting the organizations that work tirelessly to care for animals in our community.”

Building on the success of the first event, this year’s event continues the firm’s commitment to supporting local animal shelters and creating meaningful opportunities for families throughout Southeast Louisiana.

“Giving back to our community has always been an important part of who we are as a firm,” said Vicknair. “Whether we are helping students prepare for school, recognizing deserving teachers, or supporting local animal shelters, our goal is to make a positive difference in the communities we serve.”

Operation Fur-Ever Home is free and open to the public. Families, animal lovers, and anyone interested in adopting a pet are encouraged to attend and preregister.
