Saint Mark’s School and EF Academy Pasadena Unveil Temporary ‘Saint Mark’s Village’ with Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony

Published

on

PASADENA, Calif., April 4, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — In the wake of the Eaton Fire, Saint Mark’s School, an independent Episcopal school in Altadena, and EF Academy Pasadena, a private day and boarding high school, hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony to officially unveil Saint Mark’s Village, the newly completed temporary learning space for Saint Mark’s Developmental Kindergarten (DK) through 6th grade on the EF Academy campus. This milestone marks a stepping stone for Saint Mark’s recovery following the Eaton Fire, ensuring uninterrupted learning for students while the cleanup and eventual rebuilding of its permanent campus continues.

The partnership, which was initially announced three weeks after the fires, went from vision to reality in less than two months — making it the fastest local school rebuilding effort to date.

“This ribbon-cutting represents more than just a temporary solution—it’s a testament to our community’s resilience and the collective effort to keep education at the forefront,” said Jennifer Tolbert, Head of School at Saint Mark’s. “Thanks to the generosity of EF Academy, the dedication of countless supporters, and the critical state measures that expedited rebuilding efforts, our students can continue their education without disruption. We are confident that when we return to our permanent campus, it will be even stronger and better for the future.”

The new Saint Mark’s Village spans more than 12,000 square feet, featuring 22 classrooms, administrative offices, and dedicated outdoor space to foster a sense of continuity and community for Saint Mark’s students. Built on 32,000 square feet of previously unused land area at EF Academy, the Village was designed in collaboration with PjHM Architects and WillScot, to provide a high-quality learning environment while seamlessly integrating with EF Academy’s existing facilities.

“This partnership is a powerful example of what can happen when a community works together, supported by proactive leadership at every level,” said Dr. Sally Mingarelli, Head of School at EF Academy Pasadena. “With Saint Mark’s Village, we are ensuring students not only have a place to learn but also access to the resources and stability they need during this transition.”

U.S. Representative Judy Chu added, “As someone who visited EF Academy during its earliest days, I’ve seen firsthand the school’s deep commitment to education and community. The swift creation of Saint Mark’s Village is a remarkable testament to that spirit. I commend both EF Academy and Saint Mark’s for turning challenge into opportunity and ensuring that students continue to learn, grow, and thrive in the face of adversity.”

EF Academy Pasadena is providing Saint Mark’s Village with the land at no cost, underscoring its commitment to educational collaboration and community support. Beyond the dedicated learning space, Saint Mark’s students will also have access to EF Academy’s state-of-the-art STEM labs, arts spaces, gymnasium, and other campus resources—ensuring they can thrive academically and socially during this transitional period.

L.A. County Supervisor Kathryn Barger commended the partnership, adding, “The creation of Saint Mark’s Village in such a short time is a shining example of what can be accomplished when a community comes together. Pasadena has shown incredible leadership in ensuring students have a place to learn and grow, and this collaboration between Saint Mark’s and EF Academy Pasadena demonstrates the power of education to unite and uplift.”

Pasadena City Councilmember Rick Cole stated, “The rapid development of Saint Mark’s Village represents Pasadena’s commitment to step up and do all we can to ensure fire victims are rehoused, kids are back in school, businesses can reopen, and we can rebuild the fabric of our shared Altadena/Pasadena community. Kudos to the City staff and EF Academy for their speed and collaboration to get this done!”

Thanks to Governor Gavin Newsom’s Executive Order, N-6-25, which cleared the way for rapid rebuilding efforts, the City of Pasadena was able to move quickly to issue permits and allocate resources to allow EF Academy to host Saint Mark’s on its high school campus. At the same time, the Village would not have been possible without the City of Pasadena’s whole-of-government approach, accelerating permits and assisting with essential infrastructure, enabling dozens of local architects, engineers, and contractors — many of whom donated their time – to help Saint Mark’s Village go from groundbreaking to ribbon cutting in approximately six weeks.

Saint Mark’s School is raising funds to provide tuition assistance for displaced families, replace essential classroom materials and technology, support trauma-informed mental health services, and support teachers. Funds will also help cover the costs of operating the school’s temporary campus, as it prepares for the long-term rebuild of its permanent campus shared with Saint Mark’s Episcopal Church. Community members who wish to support the effort and help bring these pillars of the community back to Altadena can find information about donating on the school’s website.

Rondo Energy and Rio Tinto Advance Australia’s Largest Thermal Energy Storage Project

Published

on

By

GLADSTONE, Australia, Oct. 20, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Rondo Energy and Rio Tinto have started front-end engineering and design on the project for a 360 MWh storage / 30 MW discharge Rondo Heat Battery, supported by a grant from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA).

ARENA’s funding for the project will be provided in stages, with an initial $3.6 million to complete front-end engineering and design work. Following successful completion of that study, ARENA will provide up to $38 million for deployment. ARENA has also approved up to $33.3 million in conditional contingency support, which would only be made available in defined circumstances to manage specific project risks, including cost overruns and electricity costs.

If progressed, the project would be delivered at Rio Tinto’s Yarwun alumina refinery near Gladstone, Queensland and would be one of the first large-scale demonstrations of thermal energy storage for industrial process heat globally, and a world-first for the alumina industry.

Rondo Heat Batteries use abundant, low-cost midday electricity to charge, storing energy as high-temperature heat in refractory brick, and supplying energy as 24/7 continuous process heat to industry. Typically, the heat is delivered as steam, directly into an industrial facility’s steam network. Australia regularly has 4-6 hours of surplus solar-generated renewable electricity in the middle of the day, but industrial facilities need heat 24 hours a day, not just when the sun is shining. By charging when electricity is cheap and abundant and discharging continuously, Rondo Heat Batteries turn short periods of low-cost electricity into 24/7 delivery of low-cost steam.

For energy-intensive industries such as alumina refining, Rondo Heat Batteries create a pathway to electrification that addresses both emissions and energy costs. Because the heat battery slots into the existing steam network, the facility’s processes run exactly as before — the only thing that changes is the energy for that heat: no longer from fossil fuels, but sourced from low cost electricity instead. The Yarwun study will assess the technical and economic viability of integrating the technology into refinery operations.

“This project shows how Australia’s abundant energy can become a competitive advantage for industry,” said Dr. Kira Rundel, Rondo’s Head of Australia. “Heat batteries allow manufacturers to use low-cost electricity to produce the reliable, round-the-clock heat their operations need. Australia’s largest heat battery will show how factories can cut emissions without increasing energy costs, helping Australian industry to increase global competitiveness and supporting local manufacturing jobs.”

Rio Tinto Pacific Operations Managing Director Armando Torres said: “Reducing emissions from alumina refining is complex, particularly when it comes to generating the high-pressure steam needed for our operations.

“This study will help us determine whether thermal energy storage can provide a technically and economically viable alternative to fossil fuels for part of Yarwun’s steam requirements.

“The best way to tackle challenges of this scale is through collaboration between industry, government, and technology partners. We welcome ARENA and Rondo’s support as we assess technologies that could help reduce our Scope 1 emissions while maintaining reliable operations at Yarwun.”

About Rondo Energy

Rondo Energy delivers firm heat and power, including combined heat and power (CHP), to heavy industry and provides power solutions and long duration storage to data centers. For industrial heat applications, Rondo Heat Batteries convert 4-6 hours of low-cost electricity into continuous 24-hour, high-temperature heat, delivered as steam or hot air up to 1,000°C. The heat delivered integrates directly with existing industrial equipment and processes, eliminating on-site emissions and running on lower cost energy. Rondo heat storage can integrate with steam turbines to deliver combined heat and power (CHP) for industry, and long duration power-to-power solutions for large energy consumers such as data centers. Built on proven refractory brick as the thermal storage medium, Rondo’s platform is engineered for multi-decade operation in the most demanding industrial environments.

Rondo Heat Batteries have been delivering firm heat and power at scale since 2023, with operational facilities serving customers in fuels and cement (including steam driving turbines for electricity) in the United States and in Asia. The next unit will come online shortly – a 100 MWh Rondo Heat Battery under construction in Europe for a chemical plant. Rondo is a global company based in California, with teams across North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Australia. Providing heat and power solutions to the alumina industry is an area of focus for the company due to the strong fit of Rondo’s technology with the heat and power needs of the alumina industry.
