ThreatLocker Highlights Key Cyber Threat Activity and Research from June 2026

Recap includes AI cyber risk, software supply chain attacks, SaaS trust failures, zero-day exploits, and community support

ORLANDO, Fla., July 6, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — ThreatLocker today released highlights of the company’s cybersecurity research, threat analysis, industry commentary, and community outreach from June.

“AI driven cyber threats continued to generate significant attention in June, but most of the attacks we looked at came back to the same issue: trusted access being misused,” said Danny Jenkins, CEO & Co-founder of ThreatLocker. “Attackers do not need everything to be vulnerable. They need one trusted path that gives them room to maneuver.”

Cybersecurity Trends and Industry Commentary

ThreatLocker examined how frontier AI models such as Claude Mythos and Claude Fable 5 are changing the way vulnerabilities are discovered and weaponized. The company cautioned that AI should not be treated as a separate category of risk; it is another way attackers can abuse trusted access. Five Eyes guidance on agentic AI threats was also reviewed, which pointed to Zero Trust as a practical way to place boundaries around AI systems and limit what attacks built with AI can access or execute.

Jenkins also spoke publicly about the limitations of restricting access to frontier AI models, noting that cybercriminals and foreign adversaries are unlikely to be stopped by limits on one model when stolen accounts, foreign models, and open-weight tools remain available. Additionally explored was how China’s GLM-5.2 shows how open-source AI is changing the cyber threat landscape, and how the LLMShare campaign exploits ChatGPT to deliver malware.

ThreatLocker Analysis of Supply Chain and Third-Party Risk

Researchers from the company continued to analyze supply chain attacks and third-party risk, with several June incidents showing how trusted repositories, software, and SaaS integrations can be abused.

The team examined how Red Hat npm packages were compromised with a credential-stealing worm, and how the Miasma worm targeted Microsoft and compromised 73 GitHub repositories. Both incidents highlighted the risks facing development environments where trusted packages can become part of the attack path.

ThreatLocker also analyzed the Mastra supply chain attack, including why the supply chain attack wasn’t about AI, but rather access, permissions, and account hygiene.

Additional analysis covered the Klue SaaS supply chain compromise, where attackers reportedly used long-lived OAuth tokens tied to Klue’s integration infrastructure to reach customer environments, including Salesforce. In a follow-up piece on what the Klue breach reveals about SaaS trust, ThreatLocker noted that the incident was not about a Salesforce vulnerability, but about the reach attackers can gain when a trusted third-party integration is abused.

Understanding New Exploits and Patch Pressure

The Threat Intelligence also tracked new exploit activity throughout June. The team was the first to validate that RoguePlanet, a Microsoft Defender zero-day, granted SYSTEM privileges on fully patched systems. The company also analyzed GreatXML and the WinRE trust boundary behind BitLocker, and continued examining what YellowKey and GreenPlasma reveal about trusting native Windows security.

These findings showed that patching remains essential, but it cannot be the only line of defense. As a result, ThreatLocker published guidance on balancing security, stability, and speed in patch management, emphasizing the need for controls that limit unauthorized execution and behavior while organizations test and deploy updates.

Education and Community

As part of its ongoing commitment to cybersecurity education, ThreatLocker hosted the webinar “MFA is not enough: How to stop phishing and session hijacking attacks”. The session explored how attackers steal credentials, hijack sessions, and bypass traditional access controls, and why organizations need to verify devices in addition to users, and limit access after login.

The organization also participated as a vendor at RejectionCon, where vendor fees helped support The Rural Tech Fund, generating an $80,000 donation to help expand access to technology education for students in rural classrooms across the United States.

SIPs Receive SEC Approval for Extended Trading Hours Initiative

Six Industry Testing Opportunities Planned Ahead of December 6 Production Launch

NEW YORK, July 7, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — The SEC recently approved CTA and UTP Plan Amendments to allow the Securities Information Processors (“SIPs”) to extend their operating hours beginning in December (https://www.sec.gov/files/rules/sro/nms/2026/34-105779.pdf) and (https://www.sec.gov/files/rules/sro/nms/2026/34-105780.pdf). In response, the Operating Committees of the UTP and CTA Plans that oversee the SIPs have announced the industry testing schedule supporting the implementation of extended trading hours, with production launch on December 6, 2026.

The scheduled testing will provide market participants with multiple opportunities to validate their systems and operational readiness ahead of the launch, when the SIPs will begin operating on an expanded schedule covering approximately 23 hours per day, five days per week.

Industry Testing Begins in October

The Plan Operating Committees, together with their respective Processors, have established the following industry testing schedule for User Acceptance Testing (UAT):

Each testing event will begin at 11:00 p.m. ET on Friday evening and continue through the standard Saturday industry testing window, concluding at 12:00 p.m. ET on Saturday.

Testing will be conducted over the CTA SIP and UTP SIP production multicast channels, allowing market participants to test under conditions that closely resemble the production environment.

Preparing for December Implementation

Beginning Sunday, December 6, 2026, the SIPs will support extended trading hours from 9:00 p.m. ET Sunday through 8:00 p.m. ET Friday, with a planned one-hour technical maintenance window each evening between 8:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. ET.

“The transition to extended trading hours continues to progress as planned, and these industry test weekends are an important opportunity for participants to validate their systems in advance of production implementation,” said Jeff Kimsey, Chairman of the SIP Operating Committees. In connection to the shift to extended trading hours, the listing markets have filed with the Commission rules mandating overnight regulatory halts for certain corporate actions. About the SIPs

The “SIPs” (Securities Information Processors) link the U.S. markets by processing and consolidating all protected equities bid/ask quotes and trades from every registered exchange, as well as FINRA’s Alternative Display Facility (ADF) and Trade Reporting Facilities (TRF), into a single, easily consumable data feed. The SIPs are an asset unique to U.S. market structure and play a critical role in making the U.S. equities markets transparent and accessible to investors worldwide.

Although often referred to in the singular, there are actually two SIPs: the combined CTA (Consolidated Tape Association) and CQ (Consolidated Quotation System) SIP, and the UTP (Unlisted Trading Privileges) SIP. The CTA/CQ SIP is responsible for the dissemination of real‐time quote and trade information in New York Stock Exchange listed securities (sometimes called “Network A” or “Tape A” securities) and Cboe, NYSE Arca, NYSE American, and other regional exchange listed securities (sometimes called “Network B” or “Tape B” securities). The UTP SIP handles Nasdaq-listed securities (sometimes called “Network C” or “Tape C” securities). Among other duties, the OCs set their individual Plan policies, select a Processor that is responsible for providing the technology to power it, and review the performance of both the Processor and the network administrators, which are responsible for the administrative functions for each SIP, such as contracting, billing, auditing, policy development, and vendor relations. The New York Stock Exchange serves as the Administrator for the CTA/CQ SIP Plans and the Securities Industry Automation Corporation is the Processor. Nasdaq business units serve as the Administrator and Processor for the UTP SIP.

One of the primary objectives of both SIPs is transparency. Both the CTA/CQ Operating Committee and UTP Operating Committee meet quarterly, and the summary of the General Sessions of those meetings are posted to their respective websites: www.ctaplan.com and www.utpplan.com. The analysis, based on AI-powered categorization of over 63,000 ebook titles, offers a rare look at what the world is actually writing with AI tools:

Non-fiction dominates. Self-Help & Personal Development is the #1 category (10.8% of categorized titles), followed by Health & Fitness (9.6%) and Business & Entrepreneurship (7.2%). Fiction and novels account for just over 5% of categorized titles.

Ebooks are 90% of output. Of all books created, 90% are standard ebooks, 5.4% novels, 2.9% illustrated storybooks, and 1.7% coloring books.

Creation is global. The United States leads with 17.4% of books, but India (10.2%), Brazil (7.5%), Nigeria (5.1%), and Indonesia (4.1%) together account for more than a quarter of all books created — suggesting AI book tools are lowering publishing barriers fastest in emerging markets.

Faith and mind rank high. Religion & Spirituality (6.1%) and Psychology & Mental Health (5.5%) both outrank Fiction, Finance, and Marketing.
