“Every Day CO₂ Challenge”: More Than a Game, A New Way of Learning

Published

on

BANGKOK, July 20, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — When traditional lectures failed to make concepts such as carbon footprints and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) easy to understand, Varoon Varanyanond, Industrial Partnership Advisor to the Center of Excellence on Petrochemical and Materials Technology (PETROMAT), Chulalongkorn University, turned to an unlikely teaching tool: a card game.

The result is Every Day CO₂ Challenge, a game designed to help players understand Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), an internationally recognized framework used to assess the environmental impacts of products throughout their life cycle. The game was developed under the MA-RE DESIGN project, supported by GIZ (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit).

Varoon was inspired to create the game after years of working as an Eco Design consultant and seeing how difficult LCA was to explain through conventional presentations. A lifelong game enthusiast, he believed that complex concepts could be learned more effectively through interaction, discussion, and play.

Designed for everyone from elementary school students to adults, the game challenges participants to collect cards with the lowest total environmental impact score. Action Cards add an element of surprise and strategy, while a Game Master encourages players to explain their choices and reflect on the environmental consequences behind them.

What sets the game apart is its emphasis on active learning. Players are encouraged to question assumptions and explore why certain materials, manufacturing methods, transportation choices, or disposal options result in higher or lower environmental impacts.

What began as a simple paper prototype has evolved into 50 bilingual (Thai-English) game sets made from recycled plastic, with support from the Thai Packaging Design Association (ThaiPDA) and GIZ. The game has been tested with students, educators, business professionals, and the public, receiving highly positive feedback.

Perhaps the most encouraging outcome is that players begin asking questions of their own: Why does one product have a higher score than another? Why does recycling matter? Why do transportation methods affect emissions differently? For Varoon, that curiosity is the real objective.

In an era when AI can provide information instantly, he believes the value of learning lies not only in access to knowledge, but also in discussion, shared experiences, and asking the right questions. Ultimately, Every Day CO₂ Challenge demonstrates that meaningful learning can begin with something as simple as sitting down together and playing a game.

Third consecutive year of recognition from The Digital Banker for the embedded equipment-financing platform — and QuickFi’s second major industry award this month

NEW YORK, Sept. 25, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — QuickFi® has been named Best SME Banking Solutions Provider by a Vendor – Overall at the 2026 Global BankTech Awards, presented by The Digital Banker. The award was announced Sept. 24 at the awards’ virtual gala, hosted from Singapore.

It is QuickFi’s third consecutive year of recognition at the Global BankTech Awards, following Best PaaS (Platform as a Service) Provider of the Year in 2024 and wins in two categories — Best PaaS Provider of the Year and Best SME Banking Solution — in 2025. The award also follows QuickFi’s 2026 Finovate Award for Best SMB/SME Banking Solution, announced Sept. 10 in New York.

QuickFi lets a business owner apply for, sign and fund an equipment loan or lease in minutes from a mobile device, at the point of sale, at any hour — without waiting on a bank employee. Banks and equipment manufacturers embed QuickFi under their own brand, and agentic AI now supports the customer lifecycle from application through servicing.

“Small businesses are the backbone of every economy, yet financing the equipment they run on has too often meant paperwork, waiting and uncertainty,” said Bill Verhelle, CEO of QuickFi. “We built QuickFi to change that — 100% digital, 24/7, from application to funding in minutes, with transparent pricing and fair terms. This award belongs to the bank partners who trust us with their customers, to the equipment manufacturers and dealers who put QuickFi in front of their buyers every day, and most of all to the small business owners who chose us.”

Courtroom 600’s Laurie Pasler to Headline Newberry Program Marking 80th Anniversary of Nuremberg Verdicts

Free Oct. 1 program at The Newberry pairs Pasler with Northwestern University historian Daniel Greene for a conversation about the trials, drawing on primary sources from her father’s U.S. Army service at Nuremberg

CHICAGO, Sept. 25, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Laurie Pasler, founder of Descendants Media Group and Project Director of Courtroom 600, will co-present “Nuremberg at 80: A Chicago Family’s Connection to the Trial” at The Newberry on Thursday, Oct. 1, with historian Daniel Greene. The program marks 80 years since the International Military Tribunal read its verdicts on Oct. 1, 1946. It is free and open to the public, with advance registration required at newberry.org/calendar/nuremberg.

In conversation with Greene, Adjunct Professor of History at Northwestern University, Pasler will share the photographs, diaries and documents her father preserved while working in prison administration at Nuremberg. Courtroom 600 now uses these primary sources and the trial record to help students understand the lessons and the atrocities the tribunal uncovered. Artifacts from Pasler’s collection will be on display before the program.

Nuremberg at 80: A Chicago Family’s Connection to the Trial

“My father worked at Nuremberg and never told us,” said Pasler. “Eleven years ago, after losing him, I inherited his U.S. Army documents, photographs, and memorabilia. That discovery led me to found Descendants Media Group and create Courtroom 600—to teach World War II through the lens of accountability. On this historic anniversary, I reflect on the trials’ legacy and echoes from the past that continue to ring true today.”

From a family archive to classrooms nationwide

Pasler transformed her father’s collection into a virtual museum of more than 300 curated Nuremberg primary sources, most never before seen online. Told through images and captions, the story of the trial has reached audiences in more than 55 countries. With educator partners, she then created Courtroom 600, a curriculum for grades 7–12 social studies organized around the four counts of the Nuremberg indictment. Rather than teaching WWII and the Holocaust as separate histories, Courtroom 600 uses the trial record to show students how Nazi racial ideology, rooted in antisemitism, drove the war in Europe and led to genocide. Its focus on perpetrators, evidence and accountability reflects Nuremberg’s lasting legacy: the principle that individuals, including the highest officials of a state, can be held responsible for crimes against humanity. Students examine the evidence and reach conclusions for themselves.

“The Nuremberg record is irrefutable. When students hold the same evidence the prosecutors presented, the atrocities stop being abstract, and they understand what happens when hateful ideology is put into action,” said Don Fulmer, Social Studies Department Chair at Lake Park High School. Fulmer is implementing Courtroom 600 across all grade levels this school year.

At a recent workshop for The National WWII Museum in New Orleans, 65 educators from 31 states rated the curriculum 4.7 out of 5 for likelihood of classroom implementation, consistent with earlier programs in New York, Nebraska and Illinois. Among surveyed students, 97% recognized that Jews were central to Hitler’s war plans.

Expanding the mission

With a recently awarded $25,000 grant from a Chicago Jewish family foundation, Courtroom 600 will launch a National Educator Fellowship in January 2027. Six secondary social studies teachers from across the country will pilot the curriculum in classrooms and each train three colleagues, reaching 24 educators in the first year.

Descendants Media Group is also developing Response Ready, a pilot lesson designed for Jewish students in grades 7–8 to help them build resilience to antisemitism by tracing accusations from the Middle Ages to the memes and coded language online today. The lesson pilots this fall in five Chicago-area Jewish day schools and congregations, supported by the Jewish United Fund of Metropolitan Chicago and the Jewish Federation of Omaha.
