Alfa Laval selected by Saipem to supply heat transfer technology for one of Europe’s largest carbon capture projects

Published

on

LUND, Sweden, Sept. 14, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Alfa Laval has been selected by Saipem, the EPC (Engineering, Procurement, Construction) contractor for Stockholm Exergi’s BECCS (Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage) project to supply heat transfer equipment for one of Europe’s largest bioenergy carbon capture facilities. The project is expected to begin operations in 2028 and will capture, liquify, and permanently store up to 800,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually, representing approximately one to two percent of today’s total global carbon capture capacity.

Stockholm Exergi, a leading Swedish energy provider, is taking a bold step towards net-negative emissions with the first-of-its-kind large-scale BECCS initiative set to run at Europe’s largest biomass-based combined heat and power plant in Stockholm. When fully operational, the facility will capture and store CO2 from the combustion of biogenic fuels, where Alfa Laval’s heat transfer solutions will play a crucial role, maximizing system efficiency and heat recovery. The project is part of Sweden’s climate neutrality goals, contributing to the EU’s climate strategy and positioning Stockholm Exergi as an early adopter.

“Carbon capture at this scale is one of the most demanding thermal engineering challenges in the energy transition and effective energy recovery is what ultimately makes it commercially viable,” says Thomas Møller, President of the Energy Division, Alfa Laval. “Stockholm Exergi is setting a new standard for what net-negative emissions can look like at industrial scale, and we are honoured to contribute to this landmark project with our heat transfer solutions.”

“The plant will require a lot of energy to capture the CO2 from the flue gas and liquify it, but with the high quality Ziepack heat exchangers from Alfa Laval, we will be able to reclaim the energy used. This energy will go back in our existing district heating system, which contributes additionally to our carbon removal targets,” says Egil Nybakk, Director BECCS at Stockholm Exergi.

Alfa Laval will supply its Ziepack gas-gas interchanger alongside multiple process plate-and-frame heat exchangers, crucial for maximizing system efficiency and heat recovery, and integral parts of the core capture process. The equipment package has been selected by Saipem as part of its EPC contract for the Stockholm Exergi BECCS facility. Alfa Laval’s technologies will contribute to the efficiency of the carbon capture process and support the project’s ambition to become one of the world’s largest facilities for the capture and permanent storage of biogenic CO2.

About the Stockholm Exergi BECCS project

Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) is a key climate technology that generates renewable energy from biomass while capturing and permanently storing the resulting CO2.

The Stockholm Exergi plant, BECCS Stockholm, is expected to capture and permanently store up to 800,000 tonnes of biogenic CO₂ annually, making it one of the world’s largest carbon removal facilities. The captured CO2 is then compressed and liquified, allowing for space-efficient underground or offshore storage.

About Stockholm Exergi

Stockholm Exergi is a Swedish energy provider in Stockholm. Today, more than 800,000 people and around 400 locations in Stockholm are connected to the district heating network, which is in turn connected to Stockholm Exergi’s heating and cogeneration plants.

Major Cyber Security Vendors Back SE Labs’ New Model for Independent Security Testing

Published

Broadcom, CrowdStrike, Fortinet, Palo Alto Networks and Sophos join the first public SE Labs PIVOT evaluation, designed to turn complex security testing into comparative evidence enterprise buyers can use.

LONDON, Sept. 15, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — SE LABS ®, the cyber security testing authority, today announced the first public evaluation under PIVOT, its advanced security testing programme, with Broadcom, CrowdStrike, Fortinet, Palo Alto Networks and Sophos confirmed to take part. Results will be published in early 2027.

The evaluation comes at a time of significant change in independent enterprise security testing. Several major vendors have stepped away from MITRE Engenuity ATT&CK Evaluations, reducing the number of leading products being assessed through what had become one of the industry’s most prominent common sources of technical evaluation data.

PIVOT takes a different approach. Rather than stopping at evidence of what a product detected, it is designed to show what happened during an attack, how far an attacker was able to progress, what defenders could see and understand, and how those outcomes compare across competing products.

For enterprise buyers, the aim is not to replace their own judgement, proof of concept or wider procurement process, but to provide better independent evidence on which to base those decisions.

PIVOT follows complete attack chains to determine where protection succeeded, where it failed and what happened next. This enables buyers to distinguish between a product that identified malicious activity, one that interrupted an attack before significant harm was possible, and one that detected activity but still allowed an attacker to escalate privileges or move further through an environment.

The evaluation also examines what the security team would actually see. SE Labs assesses the information presented to defenders during and after an attack, including whether products provide enough context to understand what is happening and to investigate the attempted breach afterwards.

“Independent security testing shouldn’t stop at showing what happened. It should help buyers understand what it means,” says Simon Edwards, CEO and founder of SE Labs. “We don’t ask CISOs to choose between believing SE Labs and believing the vendors. We make the underlying evidence available to Gartner and Forrester, so their analysts can examine it and add their own independent interpretation. PIVOT is designed to give security leaders meaningful comparisons without asking them to take our conclusions on trust.”

The first public PIVOT results will be published in early 2027 and will include a comparative analysis of the participating products, with detailed findings from the attack scenarios and SE Labs’ inaugural public PIVOT Rankings.

About SE LABS ®

For more than 30 years, SE Labs has been a trusted authority in cyber security testing, validating the effectiveness of the products that protect people and businesses online. The company provides impartial, expert insights to both vendors and CISOs, and is relied on by some of the world’s largest brands for its rigorous and unbiased evaluations. selabs.uk
