Xinhua Finance: Robotics Contest Highlights Chongqing District’s Push Into Embodied AI

National competition in Shapingba District draws more than 100 teams developing robotics technologies for real-world deployment

CHONGQING, China, Sept. 18, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — A national robotics competition held this month in Chongqing offered a look at China’s efforts to move embodied artificial intelligence out of research laboratories and into commercial use.

The finals of the 11th “Maker in China” SME Innovation and Entrepreneurship Contest for Intelligent Biomimetic Robots concluded Sept. 11 in Chongqing’s Shapingba District. The three-day national competition drew more than 100 teams from across China, with projects spanning biomimetic robotics, industrial automation and AI systems designed to perceive and interact with the physical world. 

Alongside the competition, organizers arranged meetings involving companies, universities and research institutions, as well as discussions aimed at technology transfer, financing and local deployment. The event formed part of a national program intended to support innovative SMEs with specialized technologies. Its theme was “Pushing Tech Frontiers, Unleashing Creativity.”

The competition comprised 13 tracks, covering work ranging from foundational research to systems approaching commercial deployment. Teams in the startup category competed in three broad areas: cutting-edge technologies, core enabling technologies and specialized applications. Their projects focused in part on the hardware, software and control systems underpinning the next generation of robots.

Teams in the enterprise category, by contrast, tested systems designed for real-world use in the electric power, healthcare and service sectors. The emphasis was on whether the technologies could perform reliably in operating environments and be scaled for broader deployment.

Many of the entries targeted technical bottlenecks that have limited the wider deployment of robotic systems. Projects included multi-robot coordination and task-scheduling systems for warehouses; assistive exoskeletons for older adults and rehabilitation patients; biomimetic robots for inspecting electric power infrastructure; miniature hummingbird-inspired flapping-wing drones; and robots capable of folding clothing autonomously. Together, the projects illustrated the range of engineering approaches Chinese developers are pursuing as they seek practical applications for embodied AI.

The competition also served as a venue for financing and business-development discussions, and several participating projects announced plans to establish operations in Shapingba. At the closing ceremony, the Shapingba District government signed letters of intent with SIASUN Robot & Automation Co., Ltd. and Chentu Technology, among other companies. ZTE also signed letters of intent with teams from Zhejiang University and Xi’an Jiaotong University.

Shapingba is seeking to establish itself as a center for embodied AI within Chongqing’s broader robotics supply chain. The value of the district’s robotics output rose 233% from a year earlier during the first seven months of 2026, according to local government data.

Third, electricity-compute synergy and supply-consumption interaction enable AIDCs to transform from rigid loads to an integral part of the new power system. Fourth, construction mode innovation and modular, prefabricated, and product-based delivery significantly shorten the lead time.

Huawei Grid-Interactive AIDC Solution Unveiled

Coupled with the rapid and severe power fluctuations of AI workloads, compute and energy infrastructure are no longer decoupled but deeply coordinated. In the watt domain, Huawei proposes a future-oriented MIMO power supply architecture. To address industry challenges, Huawei has launched the grid-interactive AIDC 1.0 solution. By integrating grid-friendly UPS, intelligent lithium batteries, and grid-forming energy storage systems, the solution enables AIDC to adapt to and support the power grid while smoothing AI workload fluctuations. In the heat field, Huawei launched an AI-powered liquid cooling system, predict the health of working fluids, and facilitate predictive maintenance.

Compute-Electricity Synergy: Establishing a Solid Foundation for the AI Era

Booming AI has brought about a sharp increase in tokens, posing higher requirements on AI infrastructure. Xia Qin, Chief Expert in Huawei Computing Strategy Planning, noted that AIDC is evolving toward an integrated, coordinated compute-network-storage architecture, and energy is fundamental to infrastructure. An energy system that is highly reliable, energy-efficient, and rapidly deployable allows hyperscale AI compute clusters to operate reliably, establishing a solid foundation for large-scale training and inference in the agentic era.

Traditional data centers have limited interaction with the power grid. However, AI workloads are prone to high-frequency changes, which can easily cause grid operation issues such as grid disconnection and unstable wideband oscillation. Josh Chen, Founder & Chairman of VNET Group, stated that power sources, campuses, and buildings can be redefined to enable mutual support among power sources, scheduling within campuses, and DC power supply for buildings. How to Achieve Sustainable Power Without Changing Your Existing Backup System

SCHWABMÜNCHEN, Germany, Sept. 20, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — CNTE has deployed a 700kW/1,624kWh battery energy storage system at an industrial facility in Schwabmünchen, Germany, integrating the site’s existing 440kWp solar PV system, 500kW diesel generator and grid connection into a coordinated hybrid energy system.

The project was designed to address several practical challenges at the factory, including limited utilization of surplus solar generation, inefficient low-load diesel operation, high fuel and maintenance costs, and the need to maintain power continuity for production.

CNTE installed 7 STAR-H (100kW/232kWh) liquid-cooled energy storage units, managed through its Energy Management System (EMS). The EMS coordinates PV generation, battery storage, grid power and diesel generation according to site demand, enabling the factory to make more efficient use of its existing energy assets.

One of the key benefits is improved solar self-consumption. Instead of allowing surplus PV generation to go underutilized, the battery stores energy for use when demand rises, helping reduce electricity purchased from the grid. Based on project assumptions, the system could generate approximately €27,000 in potential additional energy-cost savings, alongside approximately 449MWh of annual solar generation.

The battery system also reduces reliance on diesel generation during power interruptions. In a representative two-hour outage scenario, the project estimates that storage could save approximately 254 liters of diesel, equivalent to around €570 in fuel costs. Beyond direct cost savings, the project supports the factory’s broader sustainability objectives by increasing renewable-energy utilization and reducing unnecessary diesel consumption.

The Schwabmünchen project also demonstrates a practical model for industrial facilities that already operate solar and backup-generation assets. By adding battery storage and intelligent energy management, existing infrastructure can deliver greater economic value, improved energy resilience and lower fossil-fuel dependence without requiring a complete redesign of the site’s power system.
