Back Market Calls For Legally Mandated 10-Year Device Standard With Launch of ‘Mine My Phone’ a New Platform Exposing The Hidden Costs of Smartphone Extraction

Coalition call anchors on global platform revealing the hidden extraction costs behind every smartphone device

PARIS and NEW YORK, Sept. 23, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Do you know how heavy your phone truly is? A 200-gram smartphone requires more than 266 kilograms of raw materials extraction. At a global scale, more than 319 million tons1 of upstream materials are extracted annually to manufacture the world’s smartphones alone, the equivalent of more than 900 Empire State Buildings’2 worth of material each year.

That extraction is compounded by a typical 2- to 2.5-year upgrade cycle. Today, Back Market is calling for a legally mandated 10-year device standard – covering durability, repairability and long-term software support – as a key effective lever to reduce the extraction demand driving these costs. Keeping a smartphone in productive use for 10 years instead of 2.5 years can avoid approximately 757 kilograms of raw material extraction per device3.

Research4 suggests that once people understand what’s behind their technology, it changes how they think about what they buy, and how long they expect it to last.

To build that understanding at scale, Back Market has launched Mine My Phone (www.minemyphone.com), a public interest platform revealing the environmental, human and geopolitical costs behind modern devices – think Patagonia’s Footprint Chronicles, but built towards a single outcome: public and regulatory support for a 10-year device standard.

The hidden costs of devices

Access to critical minerals is increasingly shaping international relations, trade policy and territorial security disputes, as nations compete to secure supply chains for the technologies of the future.

Every smartphone device carries an extraction footprint that is rarely visible to the people who buy it:

A 200-gram smartphone requires more than 266 kilograms of raw material extraction1.Globally, more than 319 million tons of upstream materials are extracted annually to manufacture smartphones1.Up to 80% of a smartphone’s lifetime carbon footprint occurs before it’s ever switched on5.Children as young as six have been found in artisanal mines sourcing critical minerals to the tech supply chain6.Up to 1.4 billion people7 are at risk for diseases due to toxic metal pollution, with 23 million people8 alone exposed to cancer-causing levels of toxic waste.

The awareness gap

The Smartphone Extraction Gap Report4, a global consumer research commissioned by Back Market and conducted by independent research agency Opinium, surveyed 6,000 consumers across France, UK, Germany, USA, Spain and Japan to understand what people know – and don’t know – about what goes into their devices.

Key findings:

More than half of respondents cannot name a single raw material inside their smartphone.Only one in four feels confident they know what goes into a device.Seven in ten have never investigated where the materials in their devices come fromWhen learning that more than 200 suppliers are involved in a smartphone’s journey from extraction to finished product, 38% reported shock and 26% worry.Sixty-six percent of consumers globally support legislation requiring devices to remain durable, repairable and software-supported for at least 10 years.Seven in ten say evidence of child labor in a supply chain would impact their purchasing decisions. When informed that a single refurbished phone avoids approximately 243 kilograms3 of raw material extraction compared to manufacturing new, 49%4 said they would be more likely to buy refurbished.

Mine My Phone: A public reference empowering citizens

Mine My Phone (www.minemyphone.com) is a public-interest educational platform created in collaboration with an international panel of experts, scientists, independent researchers and contributors. Bringing together data, expert commentary and in-depth reporting on the extraction economy behind consumer technology, it reveals the environmental, human and geopolitical impacts of the critical mineral extraction required to make our devices. The platform is designed as a public reference point to help people understand what lies behind their tech, make informed choices and act as empowered citizens.

“Citizens cannot make informed choices or push for regulation if they lack access to information about what happens before a device reaches their hands,” said Thibaud Hug de Larauze, Executive Chairman of Back Market. “This is fundamentally a transparency problem. We hope that Mine My Phone becomes a reference citizens use to understand what’s behind their device, and a starting point for public and regulatory debate.”

Longevity as the lever: a 10-year device standard

Achieving a 10-year device standard requires coordinated action across three groups, not any single company:

Manufacturers must design durable devices to last, with 10-year software support and accessible, replaceable partsPolicymakers must enforce Right to Repair and prohibit design practices that artificially shorten devices’ lifespansCircular economy actors must expand trusted, verified refurbishment at scale

“If extraction is the cost of technology, longevity is the lever,” said Marie Castelli, Head of Sustainability & Public Affairs at Back Market. “No single company can create the 10-year device. It requires manufacturers to design differently, policymakers to legislate differently, and consumers to think differently about the technology they own.”

Regulatory momentum across markets

Back Market is supporting device longevity legislation across its core markets:

European Union: calling for repair and reuse to be prioritized in future circular economy law.United Kingdom: securing parliamentary debate on smartphone upgrade cycles.United States: supporting state-level right to repair that reframes device control legislation requiring manufacturers to provide repair documentation, parts, tools and updates available to owners and independent repair providers on fair and reasonable terms.

Building the coalition

No single company can mandate a 10-year device standard alone. Back Market is convening a coalition of manufacturers, policymakers and circular economy actors to advance their ambition, with founding partners to be announced ahead of Slow Tech Summit in Paris on October 15, where the coalition takes its first public shape.

Slow Tech Summit – Paris, October 15, 2026

Back Market will convene a full day of panels, workshops, and an exhibition revealing the extraction journey of new devices and the case for longevity, building the coalition for the 10-year device standard.

Supporting power-sector decarbonization, grid resilience, and low-carbon fuels across ASEAN

JAKARTA, Indonesia, Sept. 23, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Shanghai Electric (SEHK: 02727, SSE: 601727) showcased three energy transition solutions under the theme “Powering the Archipelago” at Enlit Asia 2026, held Sept. 22-24 in Jakarta, Indonesia.

As the premier annual platform for the ASEAN power sector, Enlit Asia attracts more than 11,000 attendees and 280 exhibitors, bringing together industry leaders, policymakers and innovators to explore advances, share insights and shape the region’s energy future.

Three Solutions for ASEAN’s Energy Transition

Tailored to the ASEAN market, the three solutions address key regional energy transition needs, including reducing carbon emissions from existing thermal power systems, enhancing renewable energy integration and stable operation of island grids, and providing low-carbon fuels for the shipping and aviation industries.

The High-Efficiency Power & Decarbonization solution is designed to help markets like Indonesia reduce power-system carbon intensity, spanning unit upgrades, fuel transition, and system optimization. Modular steam turbines for H- and F-class combined-cycle systems meet both power and heating needs while improving efficiency and reducing overall costs. Heavy-duty gas turbines can operate with up to 30% hydrogen blending, and coal-fired power retrofit solutions improve thermal efficiency and reduce coal consumption for lower-carbon operation.

The Grid Modernization & Resilience Upgrade solution addresses island-grid challenges in renewable energy integration, frequency regulation and voltage stability. It combines synchronous condensers, flywheels, multi-technology energy storage and integrated solar-storage power pods. Synchronous condensers and flywheels deliver rapid frequency response and inertia support; multi-technology storage covers short- to long-duration applications; and the power pods provide plug-and-play clean emergency power for remote areas and critical loads.

Building on the Jilin Taonan project, the full-chain Power-to-X Integrated Solutions cover wind and solar generation, green hydrogen, biomass gasification, and green methanol synthesis. The project has completed 8,000 tons of green methanol bunkering, a global single-bunkering record. Phase II, launched on August 20, 2026, targets 200,000 tons of green methanol and 10,000 tons of sustainable aviation fuel annually. Shanghai Electric is now extending these solutions to ASEAN’s shipping and aviation markets to support low-carbon fuel supply and shipping decarbonization.

Local Presence, Regional Impact

Shanghai Electric’s technologies and system solutions are supported by an established regional track record. Its energy equipment and services are deployed in Southeast Asian markets including Indonesia, Malaysia and Vietnam, with representative projects such as the Indonesia Pelabuhan Ratu 3 x 350 MW Coal-fired Power Station Project, the renewable energy plant in Selangor, Malaysia, and the recent Samalaju 500 MW-class combined-cycle gas power project in Sarawak, Malaysia.

These projects demonstrate the company’s integrated capabilities across traditional power upgrades, high-efficiency gas generation, renewable energy, and green fuels—laying a foundation for the three solutions’ further application in ASEAN.

During Enlit Asia 2026, Shanghai Electric also participated in the official conference agenda, delivering a technical presentation titled “Heavy-Duty Gas Turbine Technology for Clean, Efficient, and Smart Power Generation,” outlining its technology roadmap and regionally adapted solutions in heavy-duty gas turbines and combined-cycle systems. The company also hosted multiple roadshows and exchange activities, inviting representatives from PLN, Indonesia’s national electricity company, local customers, and academics in the energy sector to discuss fuel diversification and the development of Indonesia’s power system.

Looking ahead, Shanghai Electric will continue to draw on its energy equipment manufacturing and system solution capabilities to work with ASEAN partners and support the transition to more efficient, stable and lower-carbon energy systems across Southeast Asia.

JustMarkets: How Browser-Based Trading Is Changing Access to Global CFD Markets

Published

on

By

JAKARTA, Indonesia, Sept. 23, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — JustMarkets today showcased its browser-based CFD trading platform, offering traders direct, installation-free access to global CFD markets. As more traders move between devices, this web-based solution allows users to execute Contracts for Difference (CFD) operations directly from any web browser.

Trading Without Installation

The use of browser-based trading software may remove a common obstacle to market participation — installation. Traders do not need to download any software, configure the device, or rely on a single computer for their trading activities.

Users who trade in different places and use different devices may benefit most from browser-based platforms. The software becomes more accessible to traders who need quick access to charts and quotes.

Faster Access When Markets Move

CFD markets globally can respond swiftly to macroeconomic figures, central bank announcements, earnings news, commodity price fluctuations, and other geopolitical events.

JustMarkets’ web-based solution allows traders to respond to these events without the delay of installing software. While this cannot eliminate trading risk, it may improve the convenience of market access.

One Platform for Multiple CFD Markets

For CFD trading, browser-based trading terminals may be helpful, regardless of the asset class the trader uses. From forex and commodities to indices, stocks, and cryptocurrency CFDs, the trader can track multiple markets on a single online platform. It is particularly relevant in cases where traders monitor more than one instrument at a time or develop strategies based on overall market sentiment.

Simplicity for Everyday Trading

Not all traders require a complicated trading system for every decision they make. Often, what is needed are simple charts, live quotes, account details, and the ability to execute trades efficiently.

The JustMarkets web interface provides these core features through an uncomplicated web platform. New traders may find the platform easy to use, while experienced traders can use the web terminal to trade from wherever they happen to be.

Flexibility as the New Standard

Trading through the browser is part of a broader trend towards multiplatform trading. Traders are beginning to require greater flexibility in how they can access the market, including via desktop, mobile application, or the web.

However, the objective is not to replace other forms of trading altogether; rather, it is to provide greater flexibility to trade at a client’s convenience. For traders who require market access without an installation process, web-based trading offers an alternative platform.

Browser-Based Access Is Becoming Part of the Trader’s Routine

With an increasing number of traders moving across different platforms and seeking to trade faster in the global market, it is quite natural for web-based platforms to form part of the trading experience. JustMarkets has built its platform ecosystem with the provision of CFD instruments via platforms suited to various routines, ranging from desktop and mobile to browser-based platforms.

For the trader, the potential benefits include fewer technical steps, access to charting and order placement, and added convenience when following the forex, commodity, index, stock, and crypto CFD markets.

About JustMarkets

JustMarkets is a global financial CFD trading platform designed to eliminate technical “noise,” enabling investors to focus on what matters most: making accurate decisions. With modern infrastructure and professional services, JustMarkets serves as a reliable partner for CFD traders.

Risk Warning

Trading CFDs involves a high level of risk and may not be suitable for all investors. CFDs are leveraged products and can result in rapid financial loss. Leverage increases market exposure and the potential for losses. Ensure you understand the risks involved before trading.
