Federal Government Advances Climate Resilience at 2026 Adaptation Canada Conference

Published

on

TORONTO, Sept. 28, 2026 /CNW/ — From extreme heat and more intense storms to worsening wildfire seasons, droughts, and flash flooding, Canadians across the country are experiencing the impacts of climate change. That is why it is more important than ever to understand our risks and build our climate resilience.

Last week, more than 1,000 participants from across Canada gathered in Toronto for the 2026 edition of the Adaptation Canada conference. The event, funded in part by the Government of Canada and organized by ICLEI Canada, brought together academics, government officials, Indigenous leaders, decision-makers, and others on the front lines of adaptation to discuss how we can better build resilience and protect Canada from the worst impacts of climate change.

The conference featured over 70 sessions, plenaries, and specialized study tours to allow participants to explore real-life, innovative solutions. Highlights included discussions around the economic case for climate resilience initiatives; biodiversity loss and ecosystem resilience; building a climate-resilient North; and climate risk and national security. The three-day conference closed with a discussion on the work ahead to build a climate-resilient Canada.

These important exchanges will also help inform our whole-of-society approach to building climate resilience and support the ongoing implementation of Canada’s National Adaptation Strategy.

Protecting Canadians from climate change means preparing before the next flood or heat wave–not after. Taking these steps now helps keep people and communities safe, limit the costs borne by families and communities, and maintain the strength and competitiveness of the Canadian economy.

Quotes

“Climate change is already impacting Canadians’ safety and security, and it will continue to drive up costs. Through events like Adaptation Canada 2026, experts can explore actions and share solutions aimed at strengthening our climate resilience. By investing in the critical infrastructure needed to protect our communities and businesses from climate impacts, we are building a stronger, more resilient Canadian economy while raising awareness of the potential risks climate change poses to every region and sector across the country. By coming together, we can make more informed decisions, safeguard Canadians, and help ensure a sustainable future for generations to come.”

– The Honourable Julie Dabrusin, Minister of the Environment, Climate Change and Nature

“Canada’s response to extreme weather doesn’t have to be a trade-off between public safety and economic growth. Every dollar spent on protecting people, infrastructure, and ecosystems today saves up to fifteen dollars in avoided damages and recovery costs in the future. Adaptation Canada is the premier platform to bring together governments, Indigenous partners, and practitioners to infuse climate resiliency in all major decisions so that we’re serving Canadians not only today, but 100 years from now.”

– Shannon Miedema, Member of Parliament for Halifax

“Canada has the climate information, expertise, and experience needed to make real progress on adaptation. The challenge now is turning that knowledge into decisions that shape communities every day. That means bringing together the people doing the work across sectors and regions to share what is working, learn from one another, and move from evidence to action. Adaptation Canada 2026 is a chance to build those connections and accelerate the shift from understanding climate risk to implementing solutions.”

– Ewa Jackson, Managing Director, ICLEI Canada

Rokid Leads Global AR and AI Glasses Shipments as AI Glasses Market Surges in H1 2026

Published

NEW YORK, Sept. 29, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Rokid ranked No. 1 worldwide in the AR and AI Glasses segment by shipment share in H1 2026, accounting for 41 percent of all products shipped within the category, according to a new report by Counterpoint Research. This finding further validates Rokid as one of the leaders in an emerging product segment. This success builds on the year-on-year sales momentum Rokid established last year, when Counterpoint Research named the company the leading waveguide-based AR glasses OEM by shipments in H2 2025.

Shipments for smart glasses are surging globally as wearables turn from a novelty to a commodity. The Counterpoint Research report found that global AI Glasses shipments surged by 263 percent year over year in H1 2026. While displayless smart glasses still accounted for a majority of the shipments, AR and AI glasses shipments surged by 449 percent YoY, signaling rising consumer interest.

“The bigger story beneath the numbers is that consumers want their wearables to do more,” said Zoro Shao, Rokid Group Vice President and Global General Manager. “Rokid is at an inflection point where our mature software ecosystem, robust hardware, and lightweight design can meet mainstream use cases–and we’re glad to see this data that shows consumers are taking notice. Also noteworthy is that our recent focus on enabling new agentic experiences aligns with the report’s conclusion that agentic AI glasses will drive the next phase of growth.”

Rokid’s display-enabled glasses use a waveguide projection system to deliver information in the wearer’s field of view, minimizing distractions caused by checking a smartphone. Capable of real-time translation, navigation, teleprompting, and other features, Rokid smart glasses simplify tasks in both professional and personal settings. They also stand out by including OpenAI ChatGPT, Google Gemini, DeepSeek, and Qwen on a single device. Combining their intelligence with its embedded first-person camera, Rokid smart glasses can provide information on what the wearer is seeing and even help people with visual impairments stay aware of their environments and help them reclaim their autonomy.

Rokid smart glasses have also overcome the long-standing challenge of uncomfortable and unappealing frame designs. The Rokid Glasses weigh just 49 grams and are just as easy to wear as regular glasses. They also support a wide range of prescription lenses via a snap-on lens system.

The combination of hardware and software features has contributed to Rokid’s global success. Beyond North America and China, Rokid has recently landed in key European markets, including Germany and France, by partnering with local retailers and launching its dedicated websites. To date, Rokid’s developer community has grown to 35,000 global members. To help them easily create new smart glasses, Rokid recently announced the global availability of its AIUI Studio, a browser-based development platform, at IFA Berlin 2026.

About Rokid

Founded in 2014, Rokid is a global pioneer in augmented reality (AR) and AI, creating human-centered smart glasses that integrate intelligence seamlessly into everyday life. The company has introduced a range of innovations across AI and AR hardware, including the first open AI ecosystem for wearables, dual-chip architecture, multilingual voice interaction, intuitive AI shortcuts, and mass-produced smart glasses with display capabilities.

Applications are open now for the career training and internship program in Providence; 20-year partnership with Citizens demonstrates employer’s continued investment in local talent

Applications are open now for Year Up United’s Customer Experience career pathway in Providence, beginning October 19, 2026.The tuition-free pathway includes training in banking and customer success.Providence graduates in 2026 are earning an average of $25.04 per hour, and Citizens has provided internships to more than 400 Year Up United participants over 20 years.

BOSTON, Sept. 28, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — For young adults looking to launch a meaningful career, getting a foot in the door can be one of the hardest steps, particularly as Rhode Island’s job market shifts. Recent data from the Rhode Island Department of Labor and Training points to a changing workforce picture across the state: even as Rhode Island added jobs in August, 12,500 fewer residents were employed than a year ago and labor force participation continues to shrink. For young adults just starting out, building relevant skills, real-world experience and professional connections can be critical to getting a foothold.

Year Up United, the nation’s leading workforce solutions partner, helps young adults without a bachelor’s degree launch meaningful careers and helps employers build stronger, career-ready talent pipelines – creating pathways into careers for Rhode Islanders navigating that changing landscape. For alum Vannda Prak, that meant finding an alternative to what she had always viewed as the traditional path to success.

After transferring to community college and working in local restaurants while figuring out what she wanted her future to look like, Prak joined Year Up United’s Providence program. She pursued the IT track and later interned with Citizens, where she gained experience and built professional connections that helped launch her career. Today, Prak is a Business Insights Analyst at Citizens.

“My career really started at Year Up United,” said Prak. “In addition to the business knowledge and skills I gained during the program, it gave me things I never expected: drive, confidence, connection and hope for a brighter future that feels attainable.”

In Providence, Year Up United prepares young adults for meaningful careers through training, coaching and real-world work experience, while working closely with employers to understand their evolving talent needs. Applications are open now for the Customer Experience pathway in Providence, which kicks off on October 19. The pathway includes training in banking, customer success, preparing participants for a range of customer-facing and operational roles.

“A changing job market doesn’t mean young adults should wait to start building their careers. It makes preparing for opportunity even more important,” said Susan Murray, Chief Executive Officer of Year Up United. “The skills, experience and relationships they build today can help them stand out, adapt as work changes and be ready when the right opportunity comes.”

Year Up United participants are seeing strong outcomes locally. Providence graduates in 2026 are earning an average of $25.04 per hour, and in 2025, 76% of graduates were employed and/or enrolled in postsecondary education.

Employer partnerships help make those opportunities possible. This year, Year Up United is marking 20 years of partnership with Citizens, which has provided internships to more than 400 Year Up United participants since the organization opened its Providence location in 2005.

“Today’s workforce requires adaptability, a commitment to continuously learn and access to meaningful opportunities for growth,” said Susan La Monica, Chief Human Resources Officer at Citizens and Year Up United board member. “For more than 20 years, Citizens has partnered with Year Up United to help young adults develop professional skills, gain valuable experience and connect to career pathways that can change the trajectory of their future. We’ve seen firsthand how investing in people through mentorship, learning and career-connected experiences creates lasting opportunity for individuals while helping employers build the talent needed for the future.”

For Rhode Island young adults considering their next step, applications are open now. Year Up United’s Customer Experience program begins October 19. Learn more about eligibility and apply here.
