Estimates show Canada’s emissions went up in 2025, emphasizing need for electrification

Canadian Climate Institute’s early analysis finds emissions are headed in the wrong direction, largely driven by an uptick in gas for heating and electricity

OTTAWA, ON, Oct. 8, 2026 /CNW/ — Canada’s emissions increased in 2025, according to the latest Early Estimate of National Emissions (EENE) from 440 Megatonnes, a project of the Canadian Climate Institute. The independent analysis estimates that Canada emitted around 691 megatonnes of CO2 equivalent in 2025–an increase of about one per cent, or six megatonnes, compared to 2024.

The country remains far from achieving its climate targets. Five years out from Canada’s 2030 target to reduce emissions 40 to 45 per cent below 2005 levels, emissions have fallen just 9.5 per cent.

The Climate Institute’s analysis shows that in 2025, the increase in emissions came largely from higher natural gas use in buildings (emissions up 6 per cent) and electricity (up 5 per cent), reversing reductions in both sectors the year before. Other sectors saw little or no progress, including oil and gas, which remained Canada’s largest-emitting sector but had roughly flat emissions.

The most straightforward way to bring down emissions and get back on track to net zero is clean electrification–decarbonizing the grid and electrifying buildings, transport, and industry. But to get there, Canada must break the trend of the past 20 years.

Over that time period, electricity use has shrunk as a share of the energy used in Canada. And while the country’s grid is relatively clean, it has been getting dirtier recently: since 2020, the share of the grid that is non-emitting has fallen from 84 to 80 per cent. That’s even after factoring in growth in hydro, wind, and solar generation.

Course correction will require stronger action, including following through on the government’s recent commitment to double electricity generation capacity by 2050, while also doubling electrification and energy efficiency. Additional measures, such as achieving the equivalent of a 75 per cent electric vehicle adoption rate by 2035 will help steer Canada back towards net zero.

This latest emissions estimate comes on the heels of a Canadian summer that saw wildfires ravage communities, intense rains flood thousands of homes, and storms cause over a billion dollars in damage in the Prairies. Canada has an opportunity to change its climate story from one of stalled progress and rising emissions to an economy that’s harnessing its clean energy advantage.

QUOTES

“The increase in Canada’s 2025 emissions is yet another signal that the country must accelerate action to meet the Carney government’s own commitments. That can be achieved by doubling electricity generation capacity, doubling electrification, and doubling energy efficiency. This isn’t just about hitting emissions targets–it’s about making life more affordable; it’s about transforming our economy to be more competitive in the global energy transition, and it’s about limiting the extreme weather that’s a risk to Canadian lives and livelihoods.”
— Rick Smith, President, Canadian Climate Institute

“Canada remains off track to meet its climate goals, but the solution is no mystery: clean electrification is the linchpin of climate progress. To correct its course, the country must add more non-emitting power to the electricity grid, support the uptake of electrified technologies, and use electricity more efficiently. The most straightforward path to reducing emissions is electrifying our economy.”
— Ross Linden-Fraser, Acting Director, 440 Megatonnes

Veteran Executive Brings Three Decades of Experience Scaling Technology-Enabled Services Businesses and Advancing Cost Transparency for Clients

FARMINGDALE, N.Y., Oct. 8, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — LJM Group (“LJM”), a tech-enabled provider of small parcel shipping cost optimization solutions, announced today that Rob Gelb has been appointed as Chief Executive Officer. Gelb brings three decades of experience building and scaling tech-enabled services businesses, much of it on the buyer’s side of complex, opaque pricing—first in workers’ compensation, then in group health, and now in parcel shipping. That experience aligns with LJM’s shipper-focused model and its mission to bring clients clarity, confidence, and control over logistics costs.

“I am honored to join LJM at such a pivotal moment,” said Gelb. “Over more than 20 years, this team has built a differentiated platform with a proven record of measurable results for shippers. I look forward to working with Ken, Kevin, Thomas, Kenneth, and the broader team to scale our technology, deepen client partnerships, and lead LJM into its next chapter.”

Gelb will lead all aspects of the business, while President and Founder Ken Wood will remain actively involved in key client relationships and LJM’s strategy for future growth.

“Rob’s track record of scaling tech-enabled services businesses and bringing transparency to opaque costs makes him the ideal leader for LJM’s next phase of growth,” said Wood. “The parcel shipping landscape continues to evolve rapidly, creating both challenges and opportunities for our clients. With Rob at the helm, we are well positioned to keep investing in our people, technology, and services while staying focused on the results that matter most to those we serve.”

Prior to joining LJM, Gelb spent more than seven years as CEO of Valenz Health, where he transformed a single point-solution provider into an integrated healthcare platform spanning cost containment, payment integrity, and self-funded employer solutions. Under his leadership, Valenz completed eight acquisitions, grew from 62 to 520 employees, and achieved approximately 30% compound annual growth, including more than 15% organic growth. The company was named to the Inc. 5000 list of fastest-growing private companies in six of his seven years. Earlier in his career, he led strategy and growth at Coventry Workers’ Compensation Services and held senior leadership roles at York Risk Services Group, Intracorp, and Medlogix. Gelb is a Forbes Finance Council contributor and podcast host who writes and speaks on leadership, culture, and cost transparency. He holds a B.B.A. in Public Accounting from Hofstra University and is a CPA (inactive).

CUJO AI and F-Secure Announce Strategic Partnership to Deliver Seamless Consumer Security Across Home and Mobile

Joint offering combines best-of-breed home network, endpoint and scam protection, helping Tier-1 CSPs strengthen consumer trust in the age of AI-driven threats.

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 8, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — CUJO AI, a global leader in cybersecurity, device and network intelligence for service providers, and F-Secure, a global leader in consumer cybersecurity and scam protection, today announced a strategic partnership to help the world’s leading Tier-1 Communication Service Providers (CSPs) deliver a seamless security experience that protects consumers across home networks and personal devices.

AI is rapidly changing the scam landscape, making fraudulent content easier to produce, more convincing and increasingly difficult for consumers to distinguish from legitimate interactions. At the same time, scams increasingly cross traditional boundaries between networks, devices, applications, and digital services.

The partnership brings together CUJO AI’s home network cybersecurity and granular device and network intelligence with F-Secure’s endpoint and embedded security capabilities, covering device, scam, identity and privacy protection. Together, the companies will help service providers protect consumers across the home network and individual devices while creating a seamless security experience at home and on the go. As consumers increasingly move between home broadband, mobile networks, applications and connected devices, their security needs extend across multiple environments. Yet protection is often delivered through separate products and experiences. CUJO AI and F-Secure are working together to simplify that landscape, helping service providers bring complementary cybersecurity capabilities into a more seamless and cohesive consumer experience.

“Consumers don’t think about security in silos; they simply expect to be protected wherever they connect,” said Remko Vos, CEO of CUJO AI. “We already enable service providers to protect millions of homes through advanced network-based cybersecurity, scam protection and device intelligence. By combining these capabilities with F-Secure’s endpoint security and scam protection expertise, we can help service providers close the gap between home network and device protection and create a more seamless security experience for consumers.”

CUJO AI provides cybersecurity directly at the home network level, protecting connected devices without requiring security software to be installed on each individual device. Its platform also provides deep intelligence into connected devices, applications and network behavior, helping service providers identify threats, understand their subscribers’ connected environments and deliver subscriber-facing security services at scale.

F-Secure complements these capabilities with endpoint and consumer cybersecurity solutions spanning device protection, scam protection, identity, privacy and embedded security, bringing visible value for consumers into everyday digital interactions. Together, the companies will reduce fragmentation between network and endpoint protection and help service providers deliver a more integrated security experience across home and mobile environments.

“The trust advantage for CSPs in the agentic AI era has never been clearer, and we recognize the importance of equipping the world’s leading providers to succeed in protecting their customers in a holistic way,” said Timo Laaksonen, President and CEO of F-Secure. “We are delighted to be partnering with CUJO AI to help us achieve this; this partnership demonstrates a natural evolution in providing the best-of-breed solution with holistic protection for an evolving threat landscape.”

Through the partnership, CUJO AI and F-Secure will collaborate with the world’s leading service providers on opportunities including integrated network and endpoint protection, seamless security across broadband and mobile environments, simplified customer experiences, and new security propositions designed to strengthen subscriber engagement, retention and monetization.

The partnership also creates opportunities to combine security and intelligence across the connected environment, helping operators better understand their customers’ devices and digital experiences while protecting them across multiple touchpoints.
