Introducing Chainguard Workspaces: Hardened, Hardware-Isolated Environments for Faster Agentic Development

Published

Hardware-isolated, credential-free microVMs built from zero-CVE Chainguard OS Packages give security and platform teams a safe way to run fleets of agents at full speed

SEATTLE, Oct. 14, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Chainguard, the trusted source for open source, today announced Chainguard Workspaces, hardened microVMs that give every developer and coding agent their own secure environment, with no access to sensitive credentials and optional egress policies that block any connection a team has not approved. Because protection is built into the environment rather than left to the agent, security and platform teams can let agents run autonomously while limiting the blast radius of any compromise and keeping a signed record of everything each agent did.

The tradeoff between access and safety

Coding agents today run migrations, remediation campaigns, and refactors that last for hours, and most agents have the same access as the developer who launched them, right next to their credentials, cloud keys, and production systems. The controls meant to keep them in check, such as permission prompts and allowlists, depend on the agent’s adherence to the rules. At the same time, many developers now run a dozen agents or more at once. Teams have to choose between giving agents enough access to be useful and accepting the risk, or locking them down behind approval prompts and spending their day clicking “allow.”

“Right now teams are choosing between letting agents run next to their production keys or babysitting them through approval prompts all day. Neither one scales,” said Dan Lorenc, CEO and Co-founder, Chainguard. “Workspaces gets rid of that tradeoff. Every agent gets its own hardened, isolated machine with nothing in it worth stealing, so you can let it run for hours and trust what comes out the other end.”

A separate, hardened environment for every agent

Chainguard Workspaces is built for security and platform teams whose developers run fleets of coding agents. Workspaces run as remote microVMs that sync each developer’s local working tree, so developers keep their editor and git workflow while execution happens off their machine. Because every agent gets its own isolated environment, dozens of agents can work in parallel without colliding, and long-running migrations, remediation campaigns, and refactors can run for hours with no one watching. Teams can safely run agent-generated or third-party code, give every developer a standardized environment drawn from their Chainguard catalog, and try many candidate fixes at once. Security teams get visibility into what the agent read, ran, and reached before approving agent use.

To meet security teams’ needs, Workspaces has:

Layers of defense: Workspace microVMs are built exclusively with zero-CVE Chainguard OS Packages, including FIPS-compliant toolchains. Dependencies are verified against the lockfile at runtime, so untrusted or tampered code can’t execute.Exfiltration-safe by design: Real credentials are injected outside the workspace, so agents never hold them. Tools that need a credential on disk get an encrypted, short-lived stand-in that is useless if taken.Configurable egress controls: Optional network egress policies block unauthorized outbound requests, preventing a prompt-injected agent or compromised dependency from communicating with unapproved external systems.Total visibility into every run: Every credential call and network connection is logged in a tamper-proof record, and every run generates signed attestations of the exact environment, code changes, and check results.

Alongside those security controls, Chainguard Workspaces provides engineering teams with what they need to build faster with agents:

Fast starts and resumes: Cache-hot microVM snapshots mapped to the exact repository and toolchain let teams launch new workspaces or resume idle ones in seconds.Instant local package loading: Dependencies load directly from local disk as defined by the lockfile, removing external registry fetches and download delays from the loop.Built-in completion validation with Chainguard Checks: Paired with Chainguard Checks (also launching today in Beta), agents run CI suites in context and keep iterating until checks pass. Tying the loop exit to verified results keeps incomplete or faulty code from being handed off.Human-in-the-loop: When an agent requires developer input, the Workspace stays active for 10 minutes before automatically suspending to a snapshot. Memory state, active processes, and warm caches are preserved with no ongoing compute spend while paused.

With Workspaces, Chainguard extends the secure-by-default foundation behind its open source software catalog to the environments where agents write and run code. As agent adoption outpaces security review, the shift from securing the agent to securing where it runs is becoming a requirement for enterprise teams.

“Banks, fintechs, and corporates across Australia rely on Cuscal to move money safely. For agent sandboxing, we need an environment where AI agents can iterate quickly without risking core systems. We’re excited to work hand-in-hand with Chainguard as an early design partner to shape the future of software development end-to-end,” Brad McCoy, Senior Manager, Cloud Platforms, Cuscal.

“IDC research shows that organizations rank AI-generated code and agentic development workflows alongside third-party software and open source packages as top software supply chain concerns. Addressing that risk means accounting for what an agent can access while it works, in addition to the code it writes. Agents running with developer-level credentials and broad network access extend the supply chain attack surface in ways that many traditional controls were not designed to address,” said Katie Norton, Research Director at IDC. “Approaches that isolate agent execution environments, keep secrets out of the agent’s reach, and maintain auditable records of agent activity, such as the approach Chainguard is taking with Chainguard Workspaces, are designed to support agentic development at scale while preserving control over the development environment.”

Swedish authorities approve Sectra’s stationary phone to handle information on classification level SECRET

Published

LINKÖPING, Sweden, Oct. 15, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — International cybersecurity and medical imaging IT company Sectra (STO: SECT B) has received approval from the Swedish authorities for its stationary version of the Sectra Tiger/S phone for secure communication. The approval is for communication of information at the SECRET security level and allows authorities in Sweden to communicate highly classified information between and within authorities with conference call functionality.

The SECRET security level is a classification for information where unauthorized disclosure could harm national security. Such information must be communicated with approved security solutions that meet the required classification level requirements to ensure protection against unauthorized access, including resilience against future technological developments, for at least 30–40 years.

“The SECRET approval of our new solution is a confirmation that it meets the highest security requirements and proves our ability to deliver solutions that our civil and military defense can rely on in the most critical environments,” says Magnus Skogberg, President of Sectra Communications.

The stationary phone approved is the newest product in the quantum-resilient Sectra Tiger/S product family. The product family also includes a mobile version, which already holds approvals from national security authorities, the EU and NATO for use up to and including the classification level SECRET. Whereas the mobile version allows communication of information up to SECRET on the move, the stationary version adds point-to-point conference calling to enable efficient collaboration. Since both versions are part of the same system, calls can be made between the stationary and mobile units.

“The ability to maintain secure communications is an absolute must for secure collaboration. In those situations, it is common for several people to be gathered in one room needing to join a call on the SECRET classification level. With the approved stationary phone, they can do so with high audio quality. This makes communication more efficient and makes partnerships between important actors more secure. It is an important part in strengthening our national security,” says Magnus Skogberg.

TOKYO and MUNICH, Oct. 15, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — TIER IV, the pioneering force behind Autoware, the world’s leading open-source software for autonomous driving, and the Technical University of Munich (TUM) have established the TUM Autoware Research Center by TIER IV through a multi-year strategic research collaboration. Bringing together three TUM research groups, the initiative aims to advance safe and scalable autonomous driving systems based on Autoware, strengthen TUM’s role as a leading contributor to the Autoware community in Europe, and accelerate the transfer of research into real-world mobility applications.

Background

As vehicles become more autonomous, connected and software-defined, open-source software is becoming increasingly important to Europe’s automotive industry. The European Commission’s concept paper on an open European software-defined vehicle platform identifies a strong open-source strategy, reference implementations, standardized software components and shared validation tools as key foundations for European collaboration and competitiveness.

TUM has demonstrated this approach through EDGAR, its autonomous research vehicle running the open-source Autoware. At IAA MOBILITY 2025, EDGAR offered public demonstration rides from Messe München to downtown across urban, rural and highway environments, showcasing how open-source software, research and engineering can be integrated and evaluated under varied real-world traffic conditions.

TUM has also demonstrated the rapid adaptation to a new city. Within a week, the TUM team successfully deployed EDGAR and demonstrated autonomous operation on the urban roads of Berlin. This demonstration, in collaboration with TÜV-Verband, tested a new assessment methodology for Level 4 autonomous driving under real-world traffic conditions for the German government.

Collaboration overview

Through strategic research funding from TIER IV, the TUM Autoware Research Center by TIER IV will bring together expertise from TUM research groups at the Chair of Automotive Technology (FTM), the Professorships of Cyber Physical Systems (CPS) and Autonomous Vehicle Systems (AVS). The center will serve as a long-term base for autonomous driving research, open-source software development and doctoral training. It will also connect academic, industrial and public-transport projects and provide a platform for demonstrations and benchmark challenges.

The collaboration will focus on three areas:

Safety: Developing a hybrid architecture that combines deep-learning-based driving models with rule-based supervision. A verifiable “safety guardian” will monitor driving behavior and intervene when necessary based on defined safety constraints.Evaluation: Creating a benchmarking and verification framework for component- and system-level testing across simulation, offline analysis and real-world operation, building on TUM’s EDGAR research platform and CommonRoad expertise.Scalability: Establishing a repeatable process for adapting and evaluating Autoware in new environments, with improvements contributed to open-source projects wherever appropriate.

Future prospects

TIER IV and TUM intend the initiative to provide a foundation for expanding the open autonomous driving ecosystem in Germany and across Europe, connecting academic research, industrial development and public-transport projects. The collaboration aims to provide European vehicle manufacturers with technologies and evaluation methods that support the development of open, safe, scalable, and product-oriented autonomous driving systems. Open software, shared evaluation methods and visible demonstrations will give organizations a common platform on which to test technologies, develop talent and advance autonomous mobility toward commercial and public use.

Supporting quotes

“Safe autonomous driving at scale requires progress across AI, system architecture, verification and deployment,” said Shinpei Kato, founder and CEO of TIER IV. “By combining TUM’s research capabilities with TIER IV’s experience in developing and deploying Autoware, we aim to create technologies and open benchmarks that benefit the broader autonomous driving ecosystem. This collaboration also marks an important step toward advancing the open autonomous driving ecosystem in Europe, providing OEM manufacturers with technologies and evaluation methods that support the development of safe and scalable autonomous driving systems.”

“At TUM, we are combining learning-based methods with traditional rule-based systems to make autonomous systems that can scale but are also verifiably safe, and actually deploying them in the real world. Our autonomous research platform EDGAR is built upon the open-source software stack Autoware, which provides a great baseline for autonomous driving research and education,” said Johannes Betz, Professor of Autonomous Vehicle Systems, TUM.
