The Students Challenge by Natixis Investment Managers: Applications Open for the 7th Edition

Published

on

Manage $100 million, test your convictions against industry professionals and defend your choices before a jury in Paris: applications are open until November 25, 2026.

PARIS, Nov. 4, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Natixis Investment Managers (Natixis IM) today announced that applications are open for the seventh edition of The Students Challenge, its international virtual portfolio management competition, which invites students from around the world to step into the role of portfolio manager for a season. Launched in 2019, the competition drew more than 600 applicants, grouped into around 100 teams, for its sixth edition. Designed as a learning ground that mirrors the realities of the profession, the competition places three themes that are reshaping the industry at its core: responsible investing, artificial intelligence and private assets.

Managing $100 million with the tools and experts of the profession

The competition is open to master’s students in Europe and final-year undergraduates in the rest of the world. Teams of five to six members, deliberately drawn from diverse backgrounds and origins, must first make their case in the selection phase. About a dozen teams are then chosen to run a $100 million multi-asset virtual portfolio from February to April 2027, under real market conditions.

The playing field is that of the professionals: equities from OECD countries and sovereign bonds, to which ETFs may be added within a limit of 30% of the portfolio. Teams are also asked to build a diversification strategy in private assets, complementing their allocation to listed assets.

Teams work with the tools that asset management professionals use every day: FactSet, a market data and analytics platform, and Morningstar | Sustainalytics, a leading provider of ESG research, both partners of the competition. This professional-grade access puts students in true-to-life working conditions.

“FactSet is proud to support Natixis Investment Managers’ Students Challenge and help develop the next generation of investment professionals,” said Veronique Luizet, Senior Vice President, Senior Regional Director, France and Switzerland at FactSet. “Combining academic learning with real-world experience is essential for students entering the industry. Through this challenge, participants can put their ideas into practice using professional-grade data and analytics while developing the skills needed for a career in finance.”

“Year after year, The Students Challenge gives students the opportunity to put the principles of responsible investing into practice. We are delighted to support this initiative and to promote the integration of ESG criteria into portfolio management,” added Christophe Tardy, Managing Director, France-Benelux, at Morningstar.

On the expertise side, each team is supported by mentors from Natixis IM and from affiliated investment managers including Harris | Oakmark, Dorval AM, DNCA Finance, Loomis Sayles, Mirova, Ossiam, Ostrum AM, AEW, Ecofi and VEGA Investment Solutions. Throughout the competition, these professionals guide the teams in their decisions, challenge their assumptions and impart the rigor required to build a portfolio.

ESG, AI, private assets: criteria at the heart of the evaluation

Three pillars structure the evaluation for this edition:

ESG. Environmental, social and governance criteria carry greater weight in the scoring grid. Teams will need to show how these factors inform their investment decisions and how they align with their performance objectives.Artificial intelligence. Each team will explain where and how it used AI in its management process. The jury will assess both command of the tool and the perspective that comes with it, as one of the 2026 finalist teams put it: “AI augments the team; it doesn’t make the decisions.”Private assets. Introduced last year, the exploration of unlisted assets is here to stay in the competition, reflecting the growing role they play in investment strategies.

“The Students Challenge offers the future professionals of our industry a unique opportunity to learn by doing, to test their ideas against those of experts and to better understand the role of long-term investing in global savings. It is also a way for us to meet talented individuals from diverse backgrounds who will shape the future of asset management, and several of whom have already joined us,” said Christophe Lanne, Global Chief Human Resources Officer and Global Chief Operations & Transformation Officer at Natixis Investment Managers.

Rewarding and supporting talent

The competition goes beyond the awards. The winning team will receive a €5,000 prize from Natixis IM, which will donate an equivalent amount to the charity chosen by the winning team. In addition, finalists will devote a half-day to their professional futures: testimonials from employees of Natixis IM and its affiliates, a workshop on preparing for the transition into working life led by an external firm, a LinkedIn session run by a specialist agency and a professional photo shoot. Several former participants have since taken the leap, joining Natixis IM or one of its affiliated investment managers.

An international reach and a final in Paris

The sixth edition was won by Green Folio, a team of students from Imperial College London and King’s College London, ahead of Vanna Investment Managers (Edhec, CentraleSupélec, Dauphine, Neoma Business School and UC Berkeley) and Valens Capital (Neoma Business School and Grenoble École de Management). The jury praised the team’s ability to fully integrate ESG criteria into a rigorous financial model, in which performance and sustainable impact reinforce one another.

While diversity of backgrounds is a hallmark of the competition, Natixis IM intends to broaden it even further this year. The in-person final will take place on June 25, 2027, in Paris, where the finalist teams will present their strategies to an international jury of experts from Morningstar | Sustainalytics, FactSet and Natixis IM, and defend the choices that shaped their portfolios.

UK supply chain leaders unite to put SMEs at the heart of defence readiness

Published

By

OXFORD, England, Nov. 4, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — More than 400 representatives, from government, large enterprises to SMEs, from across the UK defence supply chain gathered at the JOSCAR Live conference organised by supplier data management solutions firm Hellios.

Industry leaders highlighted the critical role of Britain’s suppliers in strengthening national defence readiness.

Now in its fourth year and supported by BAE Systems as its Gold Sponsor and other key industry players, JOSCAR Live is an annual conference for the defence, aerospace and security industries held on behalf of its JOSCAR (Joint Supply Chain Accreditation Register) community.

The event brought together buyers and suppliers in an immersive panel-led environment providing delegates with opportunities to network, share insight, take part in ‘meet the buyer’ sessions, and explore an exclusive buyer marketplace.

The event also celebrated the contribution of smaller businesses through the JOSCAR SME Innovation Award, supported by BAE Systems, recognising innovation across the Defence and Aerospace community.

The conference involved representatives from the MOD, major contractors including Boeing Defence UK, Leonardo, Ultra Maritime, Jaltek, MBDA, financial institutions such as Lloyds Banking Group, alongside mid-tier suppliers and SMEs from across the country.

It comes as the UK Government has itself highlighted the important contribution SMEs will make in ensuring the Ministry of Defence (MOD) is equipped to face evolving global threats. Mounting geopolitical, economic and security pressures are reshaping increasingly complex, interconnected supply chains, underlining the importance of giving SMEs greater access to defence procurement opportunities.

In July, the MOD, as part of the Defence Investment Plan, announced how it will be engaging the SME community through its Small and Medium-sized Enterprise action plan, and Business Growth Service, which is aimed at ‘delivering the most comprehensive package of support in a generation’.

Led by the Defence Office for Small Business Growth, the department aims to increase defence spending with British firms and SMEs by £2.5 billion by summer 2028, in addition to its current £5 billion baseline. It also plans to introduce measures to simplify public sector procurement, to ensure that advice and support is easier to access, and businesses of all sizes have a fair opportunity to compete for public contracts.

Supply chain agility critical to defence readiness

Keynote speakers, including Air Vice-Marshal Ange Baker, Director Joint Support at the Ministry of Defence, and Lord Gavin Barwell, Founder of NorthStar Advisory and former Downing Street Chief of Staff, outlined the future direction of UK defence and the MOD’s priorities for readiness, support and future capability in the face of increasingly frequent and overlapping global events.

Throughout the event leaders discussed the need for supply chains that are resilient, agile and able to respond quickly to evolving geopolitical and security challenges. Speakers stressed the importance of compliance, supplier assurance and greater cross-sector collaboration between industry, government and prime contractors to ensure the defence sector can scale its capability, adapt to changing requirements and maintain operational readiness.

Air Vice-Marshal Baker said: “From rocks to rockets, our defence readiness depends on the strength and resilience of the entire defence supply chain. SMEs have an increasingly important role to play, bringing vital skills, innovation and agility. Greater collaboration among all stakeholders will be essential if we are to continue to build our capability, capacity, and the robustness to respond effectively to an increasingly complex threat landscape.”

The industry also focused on the need to invest in future skills and create clearer pathways for SMEs into defence procurement. Greater transparency between stakeholders, clearer demand signals for better visibility around future requirements, and improved access to decisionmakers were highlighted as key to helping suppliers identify opportunities, strengthen partnerships and play a greater role in supporting the UK’s defence capability.

Dillon Padraig Harmon, Chief Operations Officer at Needles & Pins Aerospace, a SME supplying the defence industry, who also spoke on one of the panels, said: “Current geopolitical tensions have brought into sharp focus the vital role SMEs can play in strengthening the UK’s defence readiness. SMEs are the backbone of Britain, driving innovation, investing in the next generation of talent, and providing the specialist skills our defence supply chain needs.

“By working closely with industry, education providers and government, we can help develop the skills and services needed to support future defence capability and long-term economic growth. Events such as JOSCAR Live play an important role in bringing SMEs and prime contractors together, creating opportunities to share expertise, build partnerships and strengthen the UK defence supply chain.

“That greater connectivity across the sector is essential to ensuring the supply chain has the capability, agility and capacity to respond effectively to emerging threats.”

JOSCAR acts as a centralised compliance and pre-qualification system connecting major contractors with thousands of suppliers. It gives buyers greater visibility, enabling them to manage supply chain risk, including third-party risk management, and meet regulatory requirements.

Colin Maund, Chief Executive Officer, Hellios, added: “The strength of the UK’s defence sector depends on the capability of the supply chain that feeds it.

“This year’s conference provided a platform for industry to share knowledge while exploring how all stakeholders can work more effectively together, creating an environment where UK SMEs can flourish. A stronger supply chain community will help support a more agile defence sector that is better prepared and better placed to face the challenges of tomorrow. JOSCAR has already reduced duplication and made the defence industry more efficient, but it is part of a larger and complex picture with much still to do.”

The next JOSCAR Live conference is planned for 2027. For further information and updates, please visit: https://hellios.com.
