Building a Quantum-Secure Future with Toshiba

SINGAPORE, Aug. 15, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — Quantum computers have the potential to decrypt sensitive data transmitted across ordinary networks, posing a threat to the security of the digital economy. Industries with sensitive and long-lasting data, such as financial services, are particularly at risk from these attacks.

Malicious actors have already begun collecting encrypted data, anticipating a future breakthrough in quantum computing that would enable them to decrypt it. These attacks, known as “harvest now, decrypt later,” target industries like banks and government departments, taking advantage of the slow aging of important data. To address this, organizations must be proactive and ensure their networks are protected by quantum-safe encryption well in advance.

Quantum secure networks are the only solution to protect data from interception and decryption, even by quantum computers. Adopting these networks aligns with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal of developing reliable, sustainable, and resilient infrastructure.

Toshiba’s Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) is an example of a quantum-secure method of data transmission that distributes ultra-secure encryption keys, making networks resilient against quantum threats. Toshiba’s QKD technology has been developed over two decades and can be deployed over existing fiber networks, making it a mature and world-leading solution.

In February 2022, JPMorgan Chase, Toshiba, and Ciena collaborated to demonstrate the viability of the first Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) network, ensuring security for mission-critical blockchain applications. In March 2022, Toshiba Group and KT joined forces for Quantum Key Distribution pilot projects in South Korea. In April 2022, EY became the first commercial customer for the Quantum-Secured Metro Network (QSMN), the World’s first commercial trial for QKD network built using Toshiba QKD hardware and key management software across BT’s fibre network. And recently in July 2023, HSBC became the first bank to join the UK’s pioneering commercial quantum secure metro network.

In Southeast Asia, Toshiba launched a Quantum Networks EXperience Centre (QNEX) located in Singapore and operated by its partner SpeQtral Pte. Ltd. (SpeQtral) to demonstrate quantum key distribution (QKD) technology and its real-world applications in securing critical infrastructure and sensitive data. A joint partnership between SpeQtral and SPTel recently submitted proposal to the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) to build National Quantum-Safe Network Plus (NQSN+) in Singapore.

AglaiaSense and Leopard Imaging to Demonstrate Privacy-First AI Traffic Sensing at Smart City Expo World Congress in Barcelona

FREMONT, Calif. and BARCELONA, Spain, Oct. 21, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — AglaiaSense and Leopard Imaging will exhibit together at Smart City Expo World Congress, November 3–5, 2026, at Fira Barcelona Gran Vía.

The two companies proposed AI-VIVA (Vision Intelligence for València and Arterials) and is selected as a finalist in the fifth urban challenge of Barcelona Innova Lab Mobility (BILM), on the application of artificial intelligence to traffic-light regulation. AI-VIVA combines AglaiaSense’s edge-AI traffic solutions with Leopard Imaging’s patented privacy architecture. At the show, the team will give a live demonstration of AglaiaSense’s signature MS500 and GS500 cameras, with the AglaiaSense AI Box, powered by NVIDIA, which adds local processing to coordinate groups of neighboring intersections.

The cameras analyze images inside the device, using the Sony IMX500 and IMX501 intelligent vision sensors. They count and classify vehicles, buses, cyclists and pedestrians in real time. Raw video is discarded on the device within 400–800 milliseconds, and only anonymous metadata is transmitted. Cities can feed that data into signal-control software to adapt traffic lights to real demand.

MS500: about 2 W average power, 1080p, powered from a standard NEMA or ZHAGA street-light socket.

GS500: about 6.5 W average, dual 4K cameras, with Ethernet, LTE Cat 4 and GPS; powered by PoE, 12–24 V DC or a NEMA adapter.

Both cameras: IP66-rated, −20 °C to +65 °C, mounted on existing poles, so no trenching or new masts are needed.

Bandwidth: more than 95% lower than CCTV-based monitoring.

AglaiaSense’s solutions are deployed across North America and Asia, and the company won first place in the Pedestrian Safety Challenge Hackathon, run by the Edge AI Foundation (formerly the tinyML Foundation) and the City of San José. In field tests, the systems achieved detection and counting accuracy above 95%. The City of Lakewood, Colorado, compared the GS500 with traditional IP cameras and LiDAR on real roads and found it more accurate, more energy-efficient, and less costly to deploy. At a high-risk crossing where pedestrians often crossed outside the crosswalk, the system alerted approaching drivers in real time.
