Rediscovering the craft of instant photography: Magnum and Polaroid set new benchmark in instant

Published

on

AMSTERDAM, July 9, 2024 /CNW/ — Polaroid and Magnum Photos launch Open Call to discover the next generation of photographic storytellers with renowned Magnum photographers Enri Canaj, Jim Goldberg, and Newsha Tavakolian

Polaroid and Magnum, two icons of photography, announce their first ever partnership. Along with renowned Magnum photographers, they are celebrating the storytelling power of black-and-white photography and the new level of craft, detail and mastery made possible by the Polaroid I-2 Instant Camera. Their combined expertise—including tips on overcoming perfection—will be shared with photographers worldwide via an open call.

Inspiring new narratives in instant photography

The partnership features the photographic approach and craft of renowned Magnum photographers known for their deep storytelling and commitment to capturing real life in all its complexity: Jim Goldberg, Newsha Tavakolian and Enri Canaj. Their works aim to inspire the next wave of instant photography storytellers. “Photographing with the Polaroid I-2 is a unique experience. Its slow process requires time to interact with the subject, light, and angle before pressing the button, making it special to me”, says Enri Canaj who explores the cultural, societal and economic shift in his “Albania Homecoming” project. Newsha Tavakolian captures a small region and the people unknown to most, in her “Mount Damavand community” project, while “Augusta community” by Jim Goldberg uncovers the hidden spirit of America.

“We are thrilled to announce an exciting new partnership with Polaroid. By combining the unique visions of Magnum photographers with the tangible and meaningful medium of Polaroid photography, we are ready to explore new realms of creativity and spontaneity. This collaboration promises to redefine the boundaries of instant photography, bringing unparalleled authenticity and immediacy to our storytelling, and to more photographers out there.” Marine Merindol, Magnum Photos COO

Imperfectionism: Reject perfectionism, pursue mastery instead

This movement seeks to reconnect us with our subjects, and lives, through instant photography. “There’s no such thing as a perfect life, nor a perfect image,” says Newsha Tavakolian “Analog and instant photography evoke that feeling because they can’t be photoshopped or filtered.” Imperfectionism is an obsession with the craft of instant photography. It champions the idea that real experiences, mistakes, and authenticity are more valuable than polished perfection. This movement is what inspired the brand to launch the Polaroid I-2 Instant Camera – the first-ever instant camera with built-in manual controls.

“Beauty isn’t just in pretty moments; it’s in the moments you can’t plan for, in mistakes, in our everyday. It’s everywhere. That’s what I truly believe.” Jim Goldberg, Magnum photographer

Open Call Details

The open call invites all photographers worldwide to submit their photography portfolio and an idea for an empathy inspired story via polaroid.com until August 12, 2024. Winners will be announced on August 26.

OCI will be the first hyperscaler outside Google to offer Google TPUs

LAS VEGAS, Oct. 27, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Oracle AI World — Oracle and Google today announced that Google’s Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) will be available through Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), marking the first time Google TPUs will be offered on a hyperscale cloud platform outside Google. By bringing Google’s purpose-built TPUs to OCI’s AI compute portfolio, customers gain the flexibility to match their most demanding workloads with infrastructure designed for near-linear scalability and highly optimized economics.

“Different AI workloads have different compute needs,” said Mahesh Thiagarajan, president, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, Oracle. “Bringing Google TPUs to OCI gives customers access to multiple leading AI compute architectures in one cloud. That choice gives them the flexibility to choose the right infrastructure for the performance, throughput, and economics of each AI workload.”

Google TPUs are custom accelerators co-designed with open software to power the entire AI lifecycle—from frontier training and large-scale inference to the multi-step reasoning data demands of agentic AI. OCI will provide the power, cooling, and datacenter networking to deploy Google TPUs at scale within its infrastructure.

“The next generation of AI will require a diverse range of compute,” said Amin Vahdat, senior vice president and chief technologist, AI & Infrastructure, Google. “TPUs give customers a powerful, purpose-built option for demanding training and inference workloads. Bringing Google TPUs to OCI will give more organizations access to this technology and greater flexibility in how they build and run their most complex AI applications.”

More AI Compute Options for Every Workload
As models grow and production inference demands increase, the performance and economics of every training run and inference request become increasingly important. Google’s TPU architecture is designed to maximize AI processing from each watt of electricity, with fast access to model data and rapid communication between chips.

Google TPUs can support large-model training and post-training, including dense and mixture-of-experts models (MoE), as well as production inference for reasoning, agentic, and long-context applications. Customers will be able to choose Google TPUs within OCI, optimized for their workloads, performance requirements, and cost objectives.

Drawing on more than a decade of custom AI silicon development, Google’s TPU portfolio delivers purpose-built compute optimized for massive machine learning workloads. Google’s eighth-generation TPU introduces two purpose-built architectures: TPU 8t for training and TPU 8i for inference. TPU 8t cuts frontier model development cycles from months to weeks, delivering nearly 3x the compute performance per pod over the previous generation, while TPU 8i is designed to handle the iterative work of many specialized agents.

Google TPUs on OCI will be available in calendar year 2027, ramping over a multi-year period to meet customer needs.

Real Estate Expert Jim Reitz Explains Northern New Jersey Home Affordability in HelloNation

Published

on

By

The article examines how property taxes, mortgage pre-approval, housing expenses, and lifestyle priorities influence homebuying decisions in Northern New Jersey.

FRANKLIN LAKES, N.J., Oct. 27, 2026 /PRNewswire/ –How much house can you truly afford in Northern New Jersey? That question is answered in a HelloNation article. The article features insights from Jim Reitz of The Reitz Group and takes a detailed look at New Jersey home affordability in today’s market. Rather than focusing only on listing prices, the article explains that buyers must account for total monthly obligations before committing to Northern New Jersey homes.

The HelloNation article notes that Franklin Lakes real estate differs significantly from many other Bergen County homes and Hudson County homes. Local pricing, inventory levels, and demand all influence what buyers can realistically afford. Reviewing income, savings, and existing debt provides a clearer picture of sustainable monthly payments.

Mortgage pre-approval is presented as the first practical step in the process. The article explains that mortgage pre-approval helps buyers understand the maximum loan amount a lender will support based on income and credit profile. In competitive segments of Franklin Lakes real estate, where active listings can be limited, pre-approved buyers are better positioned to pursue luxury homes and off-market opportunities.

Property taxes are another critical component of affordability. The article emphasizes that property taxes in Franklin Lakes are often lower than in many surrounding Bergen County homes, which can make ownership more manageable despite higher purchase prices. Comparing property taxes across communities helps buyers evaluate long-term financial impact.

Insurance, utilities, and maintenance are also part of the total cost equation. The article explains that overlooking these recurring expenses can strain budgets over time. Including these costs when evaluating Northern New Jersey homes ensures that monthly obligations remain sustainable.

Lifestyle priorities further influence affordability decisions. Homes located near transit or within highly rated districts may carry higher upfront prices but offer strong long-term value. The article highlights that school quality is a key factor for many families considering Franklin Lakes real estate, as it supports both daily living and resale potential.

Luxury features common in Franklin Lakes, such as large lots, pools, and updated interiors, can also affect pricing. The article explains that while luxury homes often command premium values, they may align well with long-term home investment goals. Buyers are encouraged to evaluate whether these features match their lifestyle needs and financial plans.

Commuting costs are another factor shaping New Jersey home affordability. Many residents travel to New York City or nearby business centers, adding expenses for tolls, fuel, parking, or transit. Factoring commuting costs into monthly budgets provides a more accurate understanding of total housing expenses.

Down payment planning also plays a major role. Larger down payments can reduce monthly mortgage costs and improve loan terms. The article notes that buyers who contribute less than twenty percent may need mortgage insurance, which should be included in affordability calculations.

Investment considerations are addressed as well. Limited land availability in Franklin Lakes can make renovation or new construction appealing for buyers focused on long-term home investment. Understanding construction costs and local demand helps determine whether a property supports both personal enjoyment and financial growth.

The article concludes that determining how much house you can afford requires careful evaluation of finances, local conditions, and long-term goals. By combining mortgage pre-approval, realistic budgeting, and knowledge of Franklin Lakes real estate, buyers can approach Northern New Jersey homes with confidence and clarity.
