Ashis Barad, MD, named inaugural Chief Digital & Technology Officer

NEW YORK, Aug. 13, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — Following a nationwide search, Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS), the world’s leading academic medical center focused on musculoskeletal health, today announced the appointment of Ashis Barad, MD, as its inaugural Chief Digital & Technology Officer (CDTO).  Dr. Barad will start in the new role on September 10.

The move reflects prioritization of data and technology by HSS under the leadership of Bryan Kelly, MD, MBA, who became president and chief executive last September after serving as its surgeon-in-chief and medical director.  “HSS has a special responsibility and opportunity to continue to lead the advancement of musculoskeletal science and care, and we are at the dawn of a new era of possibilities enabled by digital technologies,” said Kelly.

Dr. Barad is a physician leader with more than 18 years of experience in clinical medicine and various technology domains, including digital and virtual health, artificial intelligence (AI), and data analytics. He comes to us from Allegheny Health Network, in Pittsburgh, where he served as Chief Digital and Information Officer.

In this newly created role at HSS, Dr. Barad, who began his career as a board-certified pediatric gastroenterologist, will lead enterprise-wide technology and digital operations. He will partner with leaders throughout the organization to optimize care delivery, the patient experience, and clinical outcomes by harnessing the power of technical and digital solutions.

“I’m honored to take on this new role to bridge the gap between executives, clinicians, and technical teams and drive the adoption of digital solutions into clinical workflows,” said Dr. Barad. “I look forward to collaborating with the talented HSS team to provide high-quality patient care and experience in an ever-changing digital and AI landscape.”

“With the continued growth of our institution, Dr. Barad’s background in technology will help drive ongoing transformation, enable clinical consistency across all HSS locations and help us maintain our position as the number one health system in the world for orthopedics,” said Executive Vice President, Chief Strategy, Growth, & Transformation Officer, Justin Oppenheimer.

Also on September 10, HSS Associate Chief Information Officer (CIO) Elizabeth Pearlman will succeed long-time CIO Jamie Nelson, who will assume an advisory role until her retirement in April 2025. In her new role Pearlman will report to Dr. Barad, and oversee HSS’s software development and applications, technology infrastructure, cybersecurity, and IT operations.

“I’m excited to lead and continue working with colleagues who are experts in executing complex, high-profile implementations and technology deployments,” said Pearlman. “Together, we will continue to establish diverse teams to advance and modernize technical and digital capabilities at HSS.”

“We’re grateful for Jamie’s leadership in advancing HSS’s technology and patient care capabilities, and Elizabeth’s experiences will continue to evolve our technical infrastructure,” said Dr. Kelly. “Dr. Barad is an exciting leader in the field of technology innovation and will offer a unique perspective in identifying digital data opportunities that will lead HSS into the future.”

Society of Women Engineers event introduced young people to science, technology and potential careers in engineering

BOSTON, Nov. 7, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — For young people curious about how things work, Boston’s Seaport District became a place of discovery Saturday as students explored the possibilities of engineering through interactive demonstrations, hands-on activities and conversations with professionals from around the world.

The SWENext Innovation Expo, hosted by the Society of Women Engineers (SWE), brought science, technology, engineering and mathematics out of the classroom and into the Westin Boston Seaport District, where students ages 5 to 18 had the opportunity to explore STEM fields in an engaging, accessible environment.

The free, half-day event was part of WE26, the Society of Women Engineers’ annual international conference, held November 5–7 in Boston.

The Expo was designed to introduce younger students to engineering through hands-on demonstrations and activities while providing teenagers with opportunities to explore educational pathways and potential careers in STEM.

For elementary school students, the focus was on experimentation, problem-solving and discovery. Interactive activities encouraged children to explore engineering concepts while demonstrating how science and technology influence everyday life.

Older students had opportunities to connect with professional engineers, SWE members and representatives of collegiate engineering programs. Those conversations introduced students to engineering degree programs, scholarships, tutoring resources and career possibilities they might not otherwise have considered.

The event also offered parents, teachers and other STEM advocates information about educational resources, classroom activities and programs designed to help young people continue exploring science and engineering beyond the Expo.

Although the Society of Women Engineers has long focused on advancing women in engineering and technology, the Innovation Expo welcomed students of all genders, reflecting the organization’s broader commitment to expanding access to STEM education.

The event highlighted the importance of introducing students to engineering at an early age, before they begin making decisions about college majors and career paths. By connecting young people with working engineers and college students, the Expo was designed to make engineering more approachable and demonstrate the variety of opportunities available in technical fields.

The Boston event also provided an opportunity for engineering professionals attending WE26 to engage directly with the local community and share their experiences with students who may represent the next generation of innovators.

For the Society of Women Engineers, the Expo was an extension of its mission to inspire and support future engineers while expanding awareness of the profession.

And for the young people who participated, the event offered an introduction to a field where curiosity, creativity and problem-solving can lead to discoveries that shape the future.

What to Look for in an Online GLP-1 Provider: Meant Outlines Five Questions Worth Asking Before Signing Up

Published

on

By

MANASSAS, Va., Nov. 7, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — As more telehealth companies offer GLP-1 care, the options can look alike from the outside, and telling them apart takes more than a glance at a landing page. Meant is sharing five questions consumers can ask when choosing an online GLP-1 provider, along with how it approaches each one.

Five Questions Worth Asking

Who makes the clinical decisions? A trustworthy provider should be clear about which licensed clinicians review each person’s information. At Meant, those decisions are made by licensed providers through its clinical partner, OpenLoop Health. Is there a real evaluation first? Look for a health-history review before anything is prescribed, and for plain language that a prescription is never guaranteed. Meant’s online assessment covers health history, current medications, and goals. Can the company’s credentials be checked? Independent certifications are one signal consumers can verify for themselves. Meant displays the seal for its LegitScript certification on its website. Is it clear who fills prescriptions? Providers should be open about the pharmacies they work with and whether those pharmacies are licensed in the United States. Is ongoing support spelled out, limits included? Good providers explain what follow-up looks like and who handles which questions. Meant pairs care with an optional Care Coach, and medical questions go to the care team.

A certification is a transparency signal, not a government approval or a promise about results, and no checklist replaces a conversation with a licensed clinician. Meant does not diagnose or prescribe, and treatment is not guaranteed for every applicant.

Take a Closer Look

Consumers who want to see how the assessment, clinical oversight, and coaching fit together can visit Meant‘s website and compare the details against the questions above.
