From Earth-Like to Extreme: New Study Explores Venus’s Atmospheric Evolution

Published

on

WASHINGTON and HOUSTON, Jan. 10, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Why did Venus, Earth’s so-called “sister planet,” follow such a drastically different evolutionary path? Unlike Earth, Venus currently does not operate with plate tectonics and is shrouded in a dense atmosphere that has led to extreme greenhouse conditions, rendering liquid water and life as we know it impossible. What led to this dramatic difference between the sibling planets? Dr. Matt Weller’s latest research, completed as a Urey Fellow at the Universities Space Research Association’s (USRA) Lunar and Planetary Institute (LPI), provides compelling new answers to this enduring mystery.

The study, published in Science Advances, examines a critical transition in Venus’s tectonic activity, revealing how this shift fundamentally reshaped its atmosphere. Using sophisticated computational models, Dr. Weller demonstrates that periodic lithosphere disruptions –combined with massive volcanic outgassing over millions of years –may have transformed Venus from a planet with Earth-like characteristics into the extreme greenhouse world we observe today. On Venus in the distant past, massive volcanic outgassing and surface resurfacing events—triggered by shifts in mantle convection— contributed to the majority of its current dense atmosphere, some 90 times that of the Earth’s, in relatively short time scales. Over billions of years, these processes created the runaway greenhouse conditions we see today.

“Our results suggest that Venus was not always the harsh world we see now,” said Dr. Weller. “At one time, it may have had conditions more akin to that of the Earth’s.” Dr. Weller further explained that Venus’ history offers a cautionary tale about how dynamic geological processes can alter a planet’s fate. “This research not only answers long-standing questions about Venus’ past,” Dr. Weller added, “but also underscores how planetary tectonic transitions can drive profound atmospheric changes.”

This research deepens our understanding of Venus and also highlights the potential for dramatic climate and tectonic changes on other rocky planets.

Mattermost and Cohere Deliver Sovereign Human-Machine Teaming to On-Premises, Air-Gapped, and Classified Environments

The combined stack pairs Mattermost’s sovereign operations platform with advanced Cohere models through Cohere North, enabling teams in national security and critical infrastructure to run powerful agents inside the mission systems they already use. Operators can fuse intelligence, accelerate planning, defend against agentic cyber threats, and coordinate with allies — all with human‑in‑the‑loop oversight, full auditability, and data‑centric Zero Trust security.

TORONTO, Oct. 28, 2026 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — Mattermost agents, powered by advanced Cohere models through Cohere North, bring multi-user, multi-agent sovereign platforms to national security and critical infrastructure operations, delivered as a combined stack under customer control and fielded by forward-deployed engineers who turn sovereign AI into mission results.

Mattermost, the sovereign human-machine teaming platform trusted by national security and critical infrastructure enterprises worldwide, and Cohere, the world’s leading sovereign AI company delivering mission-grade language models and agentic solutions for the most demanding regulated industries, today announced a strategic partnership to jointly serve national security and critical infrastructure organizations needing AI-powered operations with zero compromise on sovereignty.

In practice, this means commanders and operators can deploy Mattermost agents powered by advanced Cohere models inside the command-and-control, intelligence, and mission workflows they already run on Mattermost: fusing streams of reporting into decision-ready assessments, accelerating planning and execution cycles from headquarters to the tactical edge, and coordinating action with trusted partner nations. Critical infrastructure enterprises in financial services, energy, manufacturing, and technology can do the same, with teams of people and agents defending against agentic cyber attacks and building, securing, and deploying digital systems faster, while keeping regulated data and critical IP on infrastructure they own. Every agent action stays under human authority and on the record, and data stays under the operator’s control.

“Operators need more than single-player AI,” said Jason Blais, VP Product and NATO Alliances, Mattermost. “They need multi-user, multi-agent environments where people and agents work as one, connected to the critical real-time information essential for effective, timely decisions, without a single byte of data leaving their control. Bringing Cohere into the environments where Mattermost customers operate gives defence and critical infrastructure organizations exactly what they need to stay ahead of adversaries with rapidly escalating capabilities.”

Built for Vital Defence and Critical Infrastructure Operations

Mattermost agents connected to Cohere North work alongside people in Mattermost’s channels, workflows, and mission-critical applications, entirely inside infrastructure the customer controls. Together they serve the isolated environments behind the world’s most vital services, from defence networks to energy grids, where operations must withstand outages, multi-tenant disruptions, and geopolitical instability, and data stays in the customer’s jurisdiction, reducing dependence on external decisions. Cohere North is built for private deployment on-premises, in private clouds, or fully air-gapped.

“Mission-critical organizations shouldn’t have to send their most sensitive data to a public cloud just to get frontier AI performance,” said Michael McMillan, VP of Global Partner Ecosystem, Cohere. “Pairing Cohere North – our advanced AI models and SOTA agentic platform – with Mattermost’s sovereign operations platform means our most regulated customers get best-in-class AI without leaving their own infrastructure.”

What Operators and Agents Can Do Together

The Mattermost and Cohere solution allows for human-in-the-loop oversight and full auditability. Zero Trust and ABAC (attribute-based access control) policies govern messages, files, agents, and workflows, and specialist data-centric security partners extend those protections to help organizations address national and jurisdictional requirements. Manual and automated data sharing is governed by policy and integrates with cross-domain solutions, and the full stack runs anywhere it’s needed, from on-premises and air-gapped networks to private clouds and classified environments. These foundational capabilities let organizations:

Defend against escalating agentic cyber attacks by connecting proprietary SIEM and SOAR platforms into automated incident response that augments human analysts and reduces fatigue, without exposing sensitive data to third-party AI or infrastructure.Build, secure, and deploy digital systems faster and more reliably through DevSecOps workflows where engineers and agents work side by side, connected to custom tooling, while keeping source code and critical IP entirely in-house.Gain decision advantage with human-machine teaming by fusing multi-source intelligence reporting into draft assessments that analysts review and approve, inside the channels and workflows where they already work.Speed sensor-to-effector workflows with AI automation that stays sovereign end to end, keeping humans in command and every decision on the record.Coordinate coalition operations faster and more effectively, with policy-based sharing controls that help each partner see only the information it is authorized to receive.Supplement existing Microsoft Teams and Azure AI Foundry investments with the right mix of cloud and on-premises: Mattermost embeds in Teams through the Microsoft Marketplace, including in GCC High, so sensitive operations run fully on-premises or in private networks within the same Teams experience.

These capabilities come to market in Mattermost v12, shipping October 16, 2026.

Forward-Deployed Engineers Turn Sovereign AI Into Mission Results

Advanced AI models and a sovereign human-machine teaming platform are now available together. Unlocking their full potential takes hands-on AI expertise inside these environments. Mattermost’s forward-deployed engineers are ready to deploy Cohere-based sovereign AI solutions for existing and new Mattermost customers, working alongside operators to drive transformation. The team draws on domestic nationals in the Five Eyes and NATO countries it serves, working within each nation’s security requirements to bring that expertise directly to where missions and critical operations run.
