China’s BCI Race Accelerates: Gestala Raises US$84 Million in Six Months
Published
2 hours agoon
By
SHANGHAI and CHENGDU, China, Aug. 26, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Gestala officially launched on January 1, 2026. Six months later, the company had completed two financing rounds totaling RMB 570 million, or approximately US$84 million.
The financing reflects growing investor interest in alternatives to implantable electrode-based BCIs—particularly approaches that aim to cover larger areas of the brain, reach deep neural circuits and reduce invasiveness.
Six Months at Startup Speed
Gestala was co-founded by Phoenix Peng and Tianqiao Chen, founder of Shanda Group and the Tianqiao and Chrissy Chen Institute.
Peng holds a doctorate from Fudan University’s Institute of Science and Technology for Brain-Inspired Intelligence and is a Principal Investigator (PI) at Tianfu Jincheng Laboratory. Gestala is his sixth startup.
The company has moved at an unusually fast pace since its launch. In March, Gestala completed a RMB 150 million angel round. Between April and May, a former Neuralink clinical lead and senior R&D and regulatory leaders from Nano Retina, a leading visual BCI company, joined the team.
In June, Gestala’s global headquarters and the first phase of its ultrasound BCI superfactory began operations in Chengdu. In July, the company opened its Shanghai headquarters and completed a RMB 420 million Angel+ round.
The latest round included participation from HSG, Lens Technology, Sinovation Ventures and C Capital. Existing shareholders including Dalton Venture, Seas Capital, Tsing Song Capital and Gobi Partners made follow-on investments.
Gestala has done more than raise capital. Within six months, the company has simultaneously developed capabilities in fundamental research, ultrasound engineering, medical-device manufacturing, clinical trials and AI.
It has also assembled an interdisciplinary team of 29 scientists and engineers and plans to expand the team to approximately 45 by the end of the year.
That pace raises a question: Why does a company whose first product is still in development and clinical preparation need to build research, manufacturing, clinical and AI capabilities at such an early stage?
The answer lies in how Peng defines the company. In his view, Gestala is not simply developing a medical device. It aims to become a bridge between neuroscience and AI — and a “Neolab” for the life sciences.
From Electrical BCIs to Ultrasound
Peng previously co-founded NeuroXess, a BCI company pursuing an invasive approach. His move to ultrasound does not mean he dismisses the value of electrodes.
Invasive electrodes can record localized neural activity at high temporal resolution and have already demonstrated clinical potential in motor and speech decoding.
But if the goal expands from controlling a cursor or an external device to understanding higher-order functions such as memory, emotion, language and movement planning, is it enough to observe only a small number of neurons or isolated brain regions?
Higher-order brain functions generally emerge from interactions across multiple brain regions and neural circuits. Electrodes are well suited to capturing localized electrical signals. Functional magnetic resonance imaging can observe activity across broader areas of the brain, but the equipment is large and its temporal response is relatively slow.
Ultrasound offers another possibility. Functional ultrasound imaging can observe brain function through changes in cerebral blood flow associated with neural activity. Focused ultrasound, meanwhile, has the potential to act on specific brain regions, including deep neural circuits.
This also explains the name Gestala, which is derived from Gestalt psychology, a school of thought that originated in Germany and holds that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
The company’s long-term goal is to build a platform with the potential for whole-brain “read and write” capabilities: decoding activity across large areas of the brain while precisely modulating selected neural circuits.
That goal, however, remains some distance from clinical reality.
Ultrasound-based readout measures hemodynamic changes associated with neural activity rather than recording neuronal firing directly. Differences in skull thickness and anatomy can also attenuate, scatter and distort acoustic waves.
AI is therefore central to whether an ultrasound-based BCI can decode and modulate the brain. Gestala plans to develop a multimodal brain foundation model that identifies relationships among neural activity, cerebral blood flow, medical imaging and observable behavior.
As foundation models continue to evolve, a growing number of researchers are recognizing that the human brain remains the only known general-intelligence system validated through natural evolution.
Understanding the brain could not only lead to new treatments for neurological disorders, but also provide new theoretical foundations and technical paradigms for the next generation of artificial intelligence.
In Peng’s view, neuroscience and artificial intelligence are two sides of the same coin. One helps us understand intelligence; the other helps us create it. Gestala aims to connect the two.
“Brain-computer interfaces, ultrasound, artificial intelligence and life sciences are all different paths toward understanding human intelligence,” Peng said. “Our true subject of study is human intelligence itself.”
The Tests That Follow the Funding
A broad technological vision still needs to begin with specific clinical problems.
Gestala has selected chronic pain as its first target indication and plans to explore other neurological and psychiatric conditions, including depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder and stroke rehabilitation.
According to the company’s current plan, its first-generation ultrasound BCI product and brain foundation model will be unveiled by the end of 2026. The product will subsequently need to progress through clinical trials and medical-device registration.
Completing the financing therefore does not mean the technology has been proven. The real tests are only beginning.
The first is an engineering test: Can the system consistently target specific brain regions across individuals with different skull anatomies and produce reproducible readout and neuromodulation results?
The second is a clinical test: Can ultrasound neuromodulation deliver meaningful and durable benefits to patients while remaining safe over time?
The third is an AI test: Can Gestala’s brain foundation model bring electrical signals, cerebral blood flow, medical imaging and behavioral data into a unified representation? Can it establish verifiable relationships among neural activity, cognition, intention and behavior, while generalizing across individuals, tasks and diseases?
Gestala’s Chengdu headquarters is responsible for product development, engineering, manufacturing and industrial translation. Its Shanghai headquarters connects fundamental research, brain foundation model development, clinical resources and scientific collaboration.
Building on its existing dual-headquarters structure, Gestala also plans to establish an overseas headquarters in either Singapore or Hong Kong. The new location will connect the company with international research, talent and industry resources while supporting global collaboration and overseas development.
Through this structure, Gestala is building an integrated operation spanning technology development, engineering, manufacturing, clinical validation, AI models and international collaboration.
But regardless of how much capital it raises or how far its global footprint expands, Gestala’s ability to join the front ranks of the global BCI industry will depend on more than reproducible clinical data. It will also depend on whether the company can turn complex, multimodal brain data into a verifiable and generalizable brain foundation model.
The former will determine whether the technology can deliver meaningful benefits to patients. The latter will determine whether Gestala can establish a shared language through which neuroscience and artificial intelligence can explain one another.

Adults aged 25–34 account for 30% of remittance senders, making them the largest age group Women now account for 45.9% of remittance transactions, rising to 49.9% among 35–44 year-olds One in eight senders sends money to multiple countries, while almost half of all transfers are below $50
LONDON, Aug. 26, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — A digital-native generation of adults aged 25–34 have become the largest group of remittance senders, while women now account for almost half of all transactions, according to new analysis from Zepz, the global payments group behind leading remittance brands WorldRemit and Sendwave. The findings also show that 70% of senders now support more than one recipient, reflecting increasingly complex financial responsibilities across people, households and countries.
The findings are published in More Than a Transfer: Understanding Today’s Global Remitter, Zepz’s first proprietary insights report. Based on the behaviour of more than 5.5 million unique senders between May 2021 and May 2026, the analysis examines how remitters’ profiles, behaviours and financial lives are changing.
Younger adults and women are changing the sender profile
Adults aged 25–34 account for 30% of unique senders, making them the largest age group, followed by 35–44 year-olds at 27%. Having grown up with mobile banking and digital-first services, younger senders bring expectations shaped by speed, simplicity, flexibility and control.
Women now account for 46% of remittance transactions, with their share increasing consistently year on year since 2020. Among senders aged 35–44, women represent 50% of transactions. The difference between the average amounts sent by men and women has also more than halved over the past five years with women now sending more than men in several sending markets.
Supporting networks, not just individuals
Over two thirds (70%) of senders now transfer money to more than one recipient, up from 65% five years ago. One in eight also sends money to recipients in multiple countries, reflecting wider financial responsibilities across households and borders.
Almost half of all transfers, 45.3%, are below $50, while 94.7% are below $250. Volumes are highest during the first few days of the month and consistently peak on Fridays, showing how remittances are often built into the regular rhythm of supporting family and meeting everyday needs, such as food or travel.
Alongside these regular sending patterns, the data also points to an increase in financial planning. Nearly a quarter of all wallet balances are held for three to seven days with those holding balances for that period having higher average deposit values than those who transfer immediately. This suggests remittances are evolving from one-off transactions into a more integrated part of day-to-day financial management.
Barrie Morris, Interim CEO of Zepz, said: “For years, the remittance story has been told through transaction volumes and growth rates. What this report shows is that people aren’t simply sending money across borders – they’re managing increasingly complex financial lives, supporting multiple loved ones, planning ahead and balancing responsibilities across countries. As those responsibilities grow, the financial services they rely on must evolve too to give people the confidence that their money will move quickly, securely and reliably.”

RHINOSHIELD AirX Sets GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ Title in Record-Breaking Near-Space Drop Challenge

Beyond Compromise: Redefining Space-Grade Protection with Performance, Design and Circularity
TAIPEI, Aug. 26, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — RHINOSHIELD, the global leader in protective tech accessories, proudly announced that its AirX Ultra-Cushioned Phone Case successfully completed an extreme near-space drop test at Esrange Space Center in Sweden on June 24. During the test, a phone protected by an AirX case was released from the stratosphere at an altitude of 30,607 meters (100,416 feet) above ground, earning the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ title for “The Highest Drop of a Mobile Phone in a Phone Case (Natural Landforms).” The challenge validates the comprehensive protective capabilities of the AirX while demonstrating that uncompromising, high-performance protection can be achieved through a circular, mono-material design that is 100% recyclable—setting a new benchmark for “space-grade protection” in phone cases.
“We were not content to stop at conventional military-grade drop protection; we wanted to go further and take on the challenge of ‘space-grade protection'” said Eric Wang, the co-founder and CEO of RHINOSHIELD. “For us, this world record is more than a validation of our product’s performance. It demonstrates to the industry that circular design does not have to mean compromise—it is a path worth pursuing, one that can drive innovation and set even higher standards.”
Three Times the Cruising Altitude of a Commercial Airliner: AirX Reaches Near Space at 100,416 Feet Before Returning to Earth to Demonstrate Ultimate Protection
Developed to redefine drop-protection standards, AirX is RHINOSHIELD’s flagship innovation in comprehensive device protection. Inspired by airbags and air-cushioning technology, AirX builds on the brand’s signature mono-material design philosophy. Its proprietary multi-layered internal-damage protection system combines impact-isolating air cushioning with a highly resilient, compression-resistant structure to disperse impact forces and help protect the device from internal damage during a drop. Before its official launch in 2025, AirX underwent an extensive series of laboratory tests, including drop testing, tumble-drop testing, internal-damage resistance testing, torsion testing, airtightness testing, and constant temperature and humidity testing, to validate its protective performance and structural stability.
To push protective performance to a new level, RHINOSHIELD partnered with UK-based aerospace company Sent Into Space to undertake an even more extreme testing mission. Following a year of preparation, the teams developed a custom test payload equipped with a remote-release mechanism, GPS positioning, and a flight-tracking system. A high-altitude balloon then carried an iPhone 17 Pro fitted with a commercially available AirX into the stratosphere, reaching an altitude of 30,607 meters (100,416 feet)—more than three times the typical cruising altitude of a commercial airliner. After capturing spectacular footage of AirX against the backdrop of Earth, the remote-release mechanism was activated, sending the test phone into free fall toward the ground.
With No Additional Protective Equipment, AirX Takes On Three Extremes: Stratospheric Cold, Ultra-Low Pressure, and Ground Impact
No heating equipment or additional protective products were used during the mission, leaving the AirX case directly exposed to the extreme conditions of near space: temperatures ranging from –40°C to –60°C and ultra-low atmospheric pressure at approximately 1% of standard sea-level pressure. After a 25-minute descent, the test phone ultimately struck the ground in free fall.
“No one could know for certain before the test whether the phone case would withstand such extreme conditions,” said Dr. Chris Rose, Co-founder of Sent Into Space. “In addition to the extreme cold, low pressure, and high-speed descent, the team also had to overcome challenges including communication interference, remote terrain, and post-landing tracking and recovery. Only by successfully recovering both the AirX case and the phone could we truly verify the test results.”
Following the landing, the test team tracked the GPS signal deep into the Swedish wilderness and successfully recovered the test phone protected by the AirX case. After reviewing and verifying video evidence, witness accounts, and the condition and functionality of the device, a GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ official adjudicator confirmed that all essential phone functions remained fully operational. The device could still be powered on and off, make calls, and take photos, while its exterior remained intact. The result demonstrated the outstanding performance of AirX’s multi-layered protection system in cushioning impacts, dispersing energy, and reducing the risk of internal device damage. RHINOSHIELD ultimately secured the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ title for “The Highest Drop of a Mobile Phone in a Phone Case (Natural Landforms).”
Staying True to Mono-Material Design: Extending Protection to People and the Planet Through Innovation for Circularity
“To provide basic protection, the mobile accessories industry commonly relies on products made from multiple materials. Once discarded, these products are difficult to disassemble and recycle effectively. As a result, billions of phone cases produced each year struggle to enter recycling systems after a single cycle of use,” said Eric Wang. “We want to prove to the world that even the most impact-resistant phone cases can be designed using a mono-material—and that protective performance and sustainability do not have to come at the expense of one another. True protection goes beyond preventing drop damage; it also means safeguarding people and the environment. Through rigorous manufacturing controls and testing by independent third-party laboratories, our entire phone case portfolio has been verified with no detectable levels of Bisphenols or PFAS, commonly known as ‘forever chemicals.’ Setting this world record is our strongest validation yet of our commitment to protection in every dimension.”
Guided by RHINOSHIELD’s commitment to mono-material design since 2017, AirX challenges the assumption that performance and sustainability are inherently incompatible, demonstrating that circular design demands an even higher level of innovation. Through its internal-damage protection system, 360° wraparound air cushioning, and embedded-button design, it delivers comprehensive cushioning against side impacts. Dual-side pressure-relief chambers and sculpted grip contours further enhance ergonomics and comfort during extended use. In addition, AirX’s futuristic, air-inspired functional aesthetic has earned international recognition through both the 2026 iF Design Award and the Red Dot Design Award—further demonstrating that protection, design, and sustainability can all be pursued without compromise.
Bringing Space-Grade Protection into Everyday Life: RHINOSHIELD Launches Space-Themed Designs to Celebrate AirX’s World Record
To celebrate earning the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ title, RHINOSHIELD has transformed the stratospheric mission into a visual showcase with a specially curated collection of space-themed designs, inviting consumers to join the celebration and experience AirX’s officially recognized “space-grade protection.”
Beyond product innovation, RHINOSHIELD continues to expand its recycling network through the RHINOLOOP® circular ecosystem. The network connects 11 company-operated stores in Taiwan with more than 4,300 recycling locations at FamilyMart stores nationwide. By integrating reverse logistics with an overseas mail-back recycling program across France, Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States, RHINOSHIELD is lowering barriers to consumer participation and making circular action a more accessible part of everyday life.
