STARMUS FESTIVAL COFOUNDERS SIR BRIAN MAY AND GARIK ISRAELIAN PRESENTED PROFESSOR BRIAN COX WITH THE 2026 STEPHEN HAWKING MEDAL FOR SCIENCE COMMUNICATION

Published

LONDON, Oct. 5, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — On October 2nd, At the Royal Astronomical Society in London, Starmus Festival cofounders Sir Brian May and Garik Israelian awarded Professor Brian Cox the prestigious 2026 Stephen Hawking Medal for Science Communication, recognising his outstanding contribution to bringing science to global audiences and inspiring millions through his work as a physicist, broadcaster and public communicator.

The Stephen Hawking Medal was established ten years ago by Professor Stephen Hawking, a board member of the STARMUS Festival, to honour individuals who bridge the gap between science and society through the arts, music and film.

Brian Cox says –
“It’s a great honour to receive the 2026 Stephen Hawking Medal from STARMUS, and particularly poignant for me because I was there with Stephen when the Medal was first announced 10 years ago. Astronomy is the oldest science, and in today’s fractured world I believe that striving to understand the Universe is more important than ever. Stephen believed in the search for knowledge for its own sake. ‘Remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet’ was Stephen’s closing line all those years ago. For me that is what STARMUS, and science, and life, is all about.”

The Festival’s opening celebration on 17th October in Tenerife will unite science, music, and culture in an extraordinary evening featuring Andrea Bocelli, Sir Brian May and Sarah Brightman, accompanied by the Las Palmas Symphony Orchestra, alongside Rick Wakeman, Rusanda Panfili, and the STARMUS All Stars Band. The evening’s centrepiece will be the presentation of the Stephen Hawking Medal, marking a decade of outstanding contributions to public engagement with science. Due to his touring schedule, Brian Cox is unable to attend the ceremony in Tenerife and was therefore presented with the medal at the private ceremony at Royal Astronomical Society, which will be broadcast during the Festival’s opening celebration.

“Ten years ago, Stephen Hawking helped us launch a dream,” said Garik Israelian, co-founder of STARMUS. “Today, we celebrate not only what has been achieved, but also the extraordinary community that has grown around the idea that science belongs to everyone. We are delighted to be awarding Brian Cox on this occasion.”

Brian May, co-founder of STARMUS, added: “The Stephen Hawking Medal was born from a shared belief that science should inspire people far beyond the scientific community. Ten years later, its message is more important than ever. At a time when truth, evidence, and critical thinking are increasingly challenged, we are proud to celebrate those who help bring science, wonder, and understanding to the world. I am delighted that this year’s Starmus is honouring Brian Cox whose uniquely powerful presentations have dramatically changed the way the general public view the world.”

As well as presenting Brian Cox with the impressive medal, Brian May and Garik Israelian also gifted him a unique OMEGA Speedmaster Moonwatch crafted in 18K Moonshine™ Gold.

The three discussed astronomy, humanity, music, AI, the universe, and the enduring legacy of Stephen Hawking, a decade after he and the STARMUS co-founders established the medal to celebrate outstanding contributions to science communication.

The Stephen Hawking Medal Ceremony 2026 will take place at – Starmus VIII: The Search for Truth, including a concert with Brian May, Andrea Bocelli and Sarah Brightman celebrating the union between science and music.
17–22 October, Tenerife & La Palma.  Tickets available www.starmus.com

AMPERA SUBMITS COMPREHENSIVE ENGAGEMENT PLAN TO THE U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION

Published

By

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla., Oct. 5, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Advanced nuclear company AMPERA has submitted a comprehensive Regulatory Engagement Plan to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) as part of the pre-application phase of the licensing process. The company anticipates submitting its combined manufacturing and fuel fabrication facility license application by October 2027.

As part of this phase of the licensing process, AMPERA is providing detailed information on key development topics such as its innovative design features, methodologies and analysis to accelerate and de-risk the regulatory review period.

AMPERA’s licensing and commercialization plan aligns with the NRC’s recently established Office of Advanced Reactors (OAR). The OAR is responsible for implementing an integrated regulatory approach that enables the safe deployment of advanced reactor technologies.

The current scope of AMPERA’s plan is integrated, covering reactor licensing under Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations (10 CFR) Parts 40, 53, 70 and 71 to support nuclear material activities, fuel fabrication, reactor core manufacturing and module deployment to multiple sites. With recent and anticipated changes in the regulatory rulemaking space for advanced microreactor technology, AMPERA’s plan provides flexibility to establish the most effective and efficient licensing path for commercialization and worldwide deployment.

“Through this process, we will share technical details with regulators, protect our intellectual property and bolster confidence in advanced nuclear technology,” said AMPERA Founder and CEO Brian Matthews. “We are looking forward to reviewing our plans with the NRC for AMPERA’s commercial subcritical, thorium-fueled, modular system.”

Unlike conventional light water reactors, AMPERA’s thorium-based fuel and subcritical operating systems take advantage of an external neutron generator to initiate and sustain operation, creating an additional layer of operational control while enabling innovative fuel cycle approaches. On Aug. 26, AMPERA and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory announced a strategic partnership for advanced nuclear fuel development.

“We are making great progress, continuing to strengthen our team and looking forward to continued engagement with regulators and stakeholders,” said AMPERA’s Licensing Strategist, Dr. April Smith. “We are bringing differentiated technology to market. The NRC is willing to take on the challenge, and we are excited to work with them on this first-of-a-kind technology in the microreactor space.”

AMPERA has added Michael Hamer as Director of Licensing & Regulatory Affairs. A graduate of the U.S. Navy Nuclear Program, Hamer has more than 25 years of licensing experience for nuclear power projects in the U.S., South Korea, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, Poland and Canada. Combining these accomplishments with over 16 years in applied health physics, Hamer brings deep and holistic expertise to licensing. Hamer and Dr. Smith will anchor AMPERA’s licensing activities as it develops the company’s “PowerNOW. NuclearNEXT.” platform.

About AMPERA
AMPERA is an advanced energy technology company developing scalable power solutions for data center, defense, industrial and maritime applications. Through its “PowerNOW. NuclearNEXT.” strategy, AMPERA combines advanced manufacturing, artificial intelligence and next-generation energy technologies to deliver reliable, factory-built power systems. YORKVILLE, Ill., Oct. 5, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — AGCO (NYSE: AGCO) is demonstrating autonomy, artificial intelligence (AI) and mixed-fleet connectivity during its annual Tech Day at Stewart Farms near Yorkville, outside Chicago, Illinois. Showcased during the fall harvest, the technologies are designed to help farmers increase productivity, improve efficiency and enhance profitability across the crop cycle.

“Farmers judge technology by what it returns, not by what it promises,” said Eric Hansotia, AGCO’s Chairman, President and CEO. “At Tech Day, we are demonstrating autonomy, AI and connected solutions in the conditions farmers work in every day, helping them get more value from every pass across the field.”

AGCO’sPTx® precision agriculture solutions are built to work across brands and machines and reach farmers through a dedicated technology channel designed to accelerate adoption. By combining specialized PTx dealers, AGCO machine dealers and OEM partnerships, AGCO can deliver retrofit and factory-fit solutions that help farmers connect mixed fleets, put their data to work and get more value from the equipment they already operate.

Throughout the event, AGCO will demonstrate how connected technologies work together from planning and planting through crop protection, harvest and service support:

Farm Management:PTxFarmENGAGE™ connects mixed fleets through a common digital platform, while the Panorama® intelligence platform transforms machine and agronomic data into actionable insights.Aurora™,AGCO’s AI assistant that operates within Panorama, allowing farmers to ask questions using voice or text and quickly access the maps, reports and insights they need to make informed decisions.Planting: Momentum® planters, ArrowTube™ and Panorama work together to improve seed placement and support more consistent crop emergence.Weed Control: The FendtRogator® 900 equipped with AI-enabled SymphonyVision™ technology specifically targets only weeds with precision application capabilities designed to reduce chemical use and improve efficiency.Harvest Season: Harvest, grain handling, fertilizer application and tillage all land in the same six-to-eight-week window and finding labor to get them done on time is a challenge. At Tech Day, the Fendt IDEAL® combine runs alongside PTx’s mixed-fleet retrofit autonomy solution, OutRun™ for tillage and in-field harvest logistics utilizing autonomous grain carts, with a FendtRogator applying next year’s fertilizer behind the harvest so nutrients are incorporated before runoff losses can occur. The result is more jobs completed on schedule with the crew a farmer actually has.FarmerCore:AGCO’s unique distribution service model combines over-the-air updates, remote diagnostics and expanded on-farm support to reduce downtime and bring expertise closer to farmers.

“Our Farmer-First strategy starts with giving farmers more choice in how they adopt technology,” said Hansotia. “Whether through the equipment they already own, the brands they prefer or the dealer relationships they trust, AGCO is focused on making practical innovation easier to access and more valuable in the field.”

The solutions demonstrated at Tech Day are commercially available today or progressing toward commercial availability. Farmers can learn more through their local Fendt®, Massey Ferguson®, Valtra®, or PTx dealer.

AGCO will host a presentation as part of Tech Day activities that updates the company’s strategy and provides a detailed review of AGCO’s precision ag business. The presentation on October 6 at 5:00 p.m. Central Time (CT) will feature Eric Hansotia, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer, and Damon Audia, President, PTx and Corporate Strategy.
