CHINA’S AUTOMOTIVE PLAYBOOK IS REWRITING GLOBAL COMPETITION, MOBILITY GLOBAL FINDS

Published

on

New report finds Chinese-origin brands could reach nearly 20% of Europe’s light-vehicle market by 2030 and intensify pressure in North America, with the industry’s real battle now being system vs. system, not car vs. car.

CENTREVILLE, Va., Oct. 13, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — The global automotive industry has entered a new competitive era in which success is determined by who can orchestrate an entire industrial system aligning cost, technology, supply chains, development speed and policy across an ecosystem, according to New Order: China, the West, and the Battle for Automotive Advantage, a new report from Mobility Global examining how the shift is reshaping competition across Europe and North America.

China has treated the automotive sector as a pillar of its national power, according to the report, and has built a decisive and difficult-to-replicate lead.

The scale of the shift is already evident, according to the analysis. Mobility Global’s analysis projects that Chinese-origin brands could reach nearly 20% of Europe’s light-vehicle market by 2030, while foreign automakers’ share of the Chinese market is expected to fall from roughly 60% in 2014 to 20% by 2030. Over the same period, China’s share of global EV production is forecast to remain near 50%, down from 60% today.

“Much of the conversation around the industry has focused on electrification, but that misses the bigger story,” said Michael Robinet, vice president of forecast strategy at Mobility Global. “What we are witnessing is a restructuring of the competitive landscape itself. Companies that succeed over the next decade will be those that reduce complexity, accelerate decision-making and build organizations capable of adapting to continuous change. The challenge is no longer just building better vehicles. It is building a better system.”

The report argues that some Western automakers face a uniquely complex challenge. They must simultaneously defend home-market share, offset shrinking profit pools in China, modernize legacy operations and compete against rivals that bring products to market faster and at a lower cost. At the same time, the analysis finds China’s rise stems from decades of deliberate industrial development that built deep supplier ecosystems, compressed development cycles, cultivated extensive battery supply-chain control and fostered a domestic market that functions as a large-scale laboratory for product innovation.

Drawing on Mobility Global’s proprietary scenario planning, the report explores two potential paths for Western automakers. In a “Western Renaissance” scenario, manufacturers make sustained progress in platform consolidation, parts standardization, software integration and shorter product development cycles, gradually reducing some of China’s current competitive advantages by 2030. In a “Managed Retreat” scenario, adaptation falls short of the pace required to remain competitive across all segments, prompting automakers to retreat from portions of the mass market and pursue further consolidation to preserve scale and profitability.

The report contends that future competitiveness will be won through structural reform rather than headline product launches. Manufacturers that simplify operations, consolidate their architectures and standardize non-differentiating parts can free up the capital and invest quickly where it matters most: resilient supply chains and the software-defined capabilities that now shape how a vehicle is judged.

Governments, too, will play an increasingly visible role. With Europe’s automotive sector accounting for 7% of GDP, 14 million jobs and €57 billion in annual R&D, according to the European Automotive Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA), the stakes extend well beyond individual firms. But Mobility Global cautions that tariffs and other protective measures can only buy time unless paired with sustained investment in industrial capacity, workforce development, critical materials and supply-chain infrastructure.

Nowhere is this tension more visible than in North America, where the challenge facing legacy manufacturers is heavily shaped by policy. While 100 percent tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles and Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) sourcing requirements have created a temporary shield, the report warns this policy wall risks fostering a complacency trap. Rather than accelerating structural reform, some US automakers are retreating into their profitable “sanctuaries” of large pickup trucks and SUVs, supported by a transitional bridge of hybrid and plug-in hybrid platforms. The analysis cautions that while this preserves near-term profitability, it delays the much-needed transformation.

According to the report, the most likely outcome is not the disappearance of Western automakers but a more divided global industry: one ecosystem centered on China and driven by scale, cost and rapid innovation; the other a more regionalized Western market focused on profitability, premium positioning and differentiated technology.

However, the significance of China’s automotive rise could extend beyond vehicle exports or market share.

“It has exposed a widening gap between traditional measures of competitiveness and the capabilities required in a more technology-driven, capital-intensive and supply-chain-dependent industry,” said Calum MacRae, executive director for supply chain and technology at Mobility Global. “How manufacturers respond to that gap will play a central role in determining the industry’s future structure.”

Monarch Metal Launches Build Your Custom Z Clip Configurator for Made-to-Order Aluminum Z Clips and Rails

Published

Monarch Metal’s new online configurator gives contractors, fabricators, installers, and purchasing teams a faster way to order aluminum Z Clips with the exact length and hole pattern their project requires.

RONKONKOMA, N.Y., Oct. 15, 2026 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — Monarch Metal Inc., a leading manufacturer of architectural metal solutions for more than 30 years, announced the launch of Build Your Custom Z Clip, a new online configurator that lets customers create custom aluminum Z Clips and rails directly from the product page. Customers choose the profile, finished length, hole size, and spacing they need, review the configuration and pricing, and add it directly to their cart.

They configure it, see the price, and add it to the cart, and most custom orders ship within two days. – Brandon Bingham, CEO, Monarch Metal Inc.

Not every project fits a standard rail length or hole pattern. An installation might require a specific finished length, a different fastener size, tighter hole spacing, or a rail with no holes at all. Build Your Custom Z Clip puts those choices on the product page so customers can configure the rail they need without submitting a quote request or working through specifications by email.

The configurator is available on six Monarch aluminum Z Clip profiles: the MF625, MF375, and MF250, along with the high load capacity MFSTR-0375, MFSTR-050, and MFSTR-075.

Custom rails can be configured from 1.5 inches to 12 feet in 0.125-inch increments for the length of the rail or clip. Customers select one of the available hole diameters for the profile or choose No Holes, then set hole spacing in 0.5-inch increments, with the maximum spacing adjusting automatically to the rail length. The configurator determines how many holes fit the selected rail and centers the pattern so the lead-in at both ends is equal. A live Configuration Summary shows the finished length, hole size, hole count, spacing, lead-in, price per rail, quantity, and total price before the order is placed.

Custom does not always mean a custom part is needed. If a configuration exactly matches a Monarch stock rail that is currently available, the configurator displays a stock option notice with a direct way to select it instead. The comparison checks rail length, hole size, and hole spacing, so a configuration is only identified as stock when the specifications actually match.

“Every installation is different, and a standard rail length or hole pattern does not always fit the job,” said Brandon Bingham, CEO of Monarch Metal Inc. “Build Your Custom Z Clip gives our customers the exact rail their project calls for without the back and forth of a quote request. They configure it, see the price, and add it to the cart, and most custom orders ship within two days. With locations in New York, Texas, and Nevada, we are positioned to get custom rails to job sites across the country quickly.”

Build Your Custom Z Clip is designed for projects that call for something outside the standard options, including panel installations that require rails cut to exact layout dimensions, millwork and cabinetry where custom lengths reduce cutting in the shop or field, architectural applications with specific fastening requirements, and fabrication work where rails are ordered without holes for in-house drilling or machining. Regular stock options remain available on the same product pages.

The configurator is built for both desktop and mobile. On phones and tablets, the layout stacks into a single column and replaces sliders with large plus and minus controls for easier adjustment on a touchscreen. Custom and stock products can be added to the same cart, and the specifications for each custom rail stay with the item through checkout, order confirmation, and order emails.
