Survey Finds Trust and Human Oversight Key to Employee Adoption of Emerging Payroll Technologies

Published

on

SAN ANTONIO, Sept. 18, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — As new technologies reshape how employees access their pay and interact with payroll, results from PayrollOrg’s 2026 “Getting Paid In America” survey suggest trust and human oversight may play an important role in employee adoption.

When asked about artificial intelligence (AI) in payroll processes, 46% of respondents said they were somewhat or very uncomfortable with its use, compared with 25% who said they were somewhat or very comfortable.

Asked separately what would increase their trust in AI-driven payroll systems, 71% selected human oversight, making it the most common response. Proven accuracy was selected by 57% of respondents, while 55% selected strong data security protections. Respondents could select up to two answers.

Interest in earned wage access (EWA) was also mixed. About 27% of respondents said they would be interested in accessing wages as they earn them rather than waiting for payday, while nearly 44% said they would not. Another 23% were unsure, and 6% said they already have access.

“Modern technology, including AI, and newer tools like earned wage access have the power to dramatically increase value, reduce friction, and improve the overall experience for employees,” said Crystal Bryant-Minter, general manager and senior vice president of employer solutions at rapid! by Green Dot. “At the same time, trust and transparency are critical, and without a clear understanding of how these tools work, employees are less likely to adopt.”

“This year’s survey points to the value of effective communication and education for employees, which may play an important role in employee adoption and sustained growth in our industry,” Bryant-Minter continued.

PayrollOrg®, the leader in payroll education and training, conducts the annual “Getting Paid In America” survey to examine how employees in America receive their pay, understand their deductions, and interact with their payroll information. One of the longest-running surveys on employee pay practices, the survey provides insight into evolving pay practices and the role payroll plays in workers’ financial lives.

The “Getting Paid In America” survey was conducted as part of PayrollOrg’s annual public awareness campaign, National Payroll Week®, held September 7–11, 2026. The survey gathered insights from approximately 11,171 respondents nationwide. Complete survey results will be available later this year at nationalpayrollweek.com.

ASI Names Former Zillow Product Leader Matt Gilliland Chief Product Officer

Published

By

TREVOSE, Pa., Sept. 18, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — The Advertising Specialty Institute® (ASI), a leading technology provider to the $27.7 billion promotional products industry, today announced Matt Gilliland joined the company as chief product officer on September 14, accelerating the company’s development of AI-powered technology for the businesses that create and sell branded merchandise.

Gilliland will accelerate ASI’s development of AI-powered technology

Promotional products are branded items such as apparel, drinkware, bags and tech accessories used by companies and organizations for marketing. ASI connects tens of thousands of promotional product distributors and suppliers through ESP+, its flagship technology platform for product discovery, sourcing, presentations, quotes and orders.

Gilliland brings more than 18 years of product and technology experience, including 12 years at Zillow, where he most recently served as vice president of product. He will lead the ASI product organization, help shape the future of ESP+ and accelerate development of AI-powered tools designed to make it faster and easier for promotional product professionals to develop campaigns, sell branded merchandise and serve customers.

“Promo is moving too fast for incremental thinking,” said ASI CEO Ashish Mittal. “Matt knows how to take complex technology and turn it into products people want to use every day. We’re building the technology our members will need next and Matt is exactly the kind of leader who can help us get there faster.”

Gilliland’s experience at Zillow includes developing technology for a large marketplace connecting real estate professionals, buyers and sellers. At ASI, ESP+ connects distributors with more than 3,000 suppliers and provides access to more than 1.2 million promotional products.

“ASI has spent decades building something technology alone can’t create: deep industry expertise, trusted relationships and a thriving community of distributors and suppliers,” Gilliland said. “I’m excited to combine that foundation with modern technology that takes work off our members’ plates and gives them more time for relationships, creativity and their customers.”

ASI is already expanding its use of artificial intelligence. In July, the company launched the AI-powered Inspire Design Studio in ESP+, allowing distributors to create realistic product lifestyle images, find company logos and generate original visual assets within the platform.
