OTTAWA, ON, Aug. 17, 2026 /CNW/ — On Friday August 14th, 2026, the Honourable Nathalie Provost, Secretary of State (Nature) met with members of the Expert Taskforce on Natural Capital Accounting and Nature Financing for the Taskforce’s inaugural meeting. Members began their work to identify innovative ways to mobilize public and private investment, creating new opportunities to protect nature and ensure its benefits are sustained for future generations.

During the meeting, Dr. Stewart Elgie and Geneviève Morin were selected as co-chairs, who will help steward future meetings. Dr. Elgie is a professor of law and economics at the University of Ottawa and the Jarislowsky Chair in Clean Economy and Innovation. He is also the founder and chair of the Smart Prosperity Institute, Canada’s major green economy think-tank and policy-research institute. Geneviève Morin helped establish Fondaction in 1996, a Quebec labour-sponsored investment fund. She held various senior positions with the organization, including Chief Investment Officer, before being appointed President and Chief Executive Officer in January 2020.

The Taskforce brings together key leaders from conservation, Indigenous-led conservation, finance, economics, and public policy to help advance innovative solutions that support nature conservation and restoration while strengthening Canada’s economy. The work of the Taskforce builds on Prime Minister Mark Carney’s announcement of A Force of Nature: Canada’s Strategy to Protect Nature, which includes an investment of $3.8 billion to protect and restore nature across the country. The Taskforce was assembled to advance Pillar 3 of the Strategy, which focuses on valuing nature and mobilizing capital.

During the inaugural meeting, members established a shared vision for their work to inform how to mobilize private investment in nature and integrate the value of natural capital into economic and policy decision-making. Members discussed the current state of natural capital accounting and nature finance in Canada, including obstacles and opportunities, and discussed the critical role that healthy ecosystems play in supporting long-term prosperity, climate resilience, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable economic growth.

The meeting resulted in broad agreement on priority themes and potential areas where the Taskforce can provide practical advice and leadership. Members began to identify opportunities for early action and highlighted the importance of developing recommendations that support informed decision-making by governments, businesses, investors, and other stakeholders.

The inaugural meeting fostered a strong spirit of partnership and collective ownership among participants. Members committed to working together to contribute their expertise and engage their networks, advance practical solutions, and champion the importance of integrating nature into economic decision-making.

HelloNation Article Explains Breaker Trips, Featuring Electrical Expert Gerald Talbot

Published

The article explains how repeated breaker trips can signal excessive electrical demand and when a professional electrical evaluation may be needed.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn., Aug. 17, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — What causes breaker trips when several appliances are running at the same time? HelloNation answers that question in an article featuring insights from Electrical Expert Gerald Talbot of Mister Sparky in West Knoxville. The article explains how repeated breaker trips often point to growing electrical demand and why recognizing these warning signs can help homeowners maintain a safer electrical system.

The HelloNation article explains that a circuit breaker is designed to protect a home’s electrical system by shutting off power whenever a circuit carries more current than it is built to handle. While an occasional breaker trip may occur for several reasons, repeated interruptions when multiple appliances or devices are operating together often indicate a circuit overload. According to the article, this protective action prevents wiring from overheating and helps reduce the risk of electrical damage.

The article notes that many homes were constructed before modern households depended on numerous electronic devices throughout the day. Computers, gaming systems, large televisions, kitchen appliances, chargers, and climate control equipment all contribute to increased electrical demand. Adding high-wattage items such as portable space heaters, air fryers, or power tools can place even more strain on circuits not designed for today’s electrical use.

The article explains that homeowners should pay attention to patterns rather than isolated incidents. If breakers trip only when specific combinations of appliances are operating, such as a microwave and toaster together or several tools in the garage at once, the circuit is likely experiencing more demand than it can safely support. The same pattern often becomes more noticeable during colder months when portable heaters increase the overall electrical demand throughout the home.

Rather than viewing repeated breaker trips as a simple inconvenience, the HelloNation article describes them as an important safety feature. Circuit breakers interrupt power before wiring becomes dangerously hot. The article cautions that repeatedly resetting a breaker without identifying the cause allows the underlying circuit overload to persist, especially if household electrical needs continue to grow over time.

The article also explains that reducing the number of devices operating on one circuit may temporarily reduce interruptions. However, when everyday household activities consistently overload a circuit, the issue may indicate that the home’s electrical system no longer matches the family’s needs. This situation is especially common in older homes where electrical usage has steadily increased without corresponding updates to wiring, dedicated circuits, or the service panel.

The HelloNation article recommends seeking a professional electrical evaluation when breaker trips become a recurring pattern. An Electrical Expert can determine whether the problem is limited to a single overloaded circuit or reflects broader capacity concerns across the electrical system. The article explains that an evaluation may identify opportunities to add dedicated circuits, redistribute electrical loads, or improve the service panel to better support modern household demands while improving safety and reliability.

The article concludes that understanding the connection between breaker trips and electrical demand helps homeowners recognize that these interruptions serve an important protective purpose. Monitoring recurring trips helps identify potential capacity issues before continued electrical demand places additional stress on the home’s wiring and infrastructure.

When Breaker Trips Point to Too Much Electrical Demand features insights from Gerald Talbot, Electrical Expert of Knoxville, Tennessee, in HelloNation.

Bloomberg Tax Introduces Controlled Calculations for Bloomberg Tax Workpapers

New governed calculation capabilities help tax teams replace spreadsheet-driven state tax calculations with greater confidence, transparency, and efficiency

ARLINGTON, Va., Aug. 17, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Bloomberg Tax today announced the launch of Controlled Calculations for Bloomberg Tax Workpapers, a new capability that helps corporate tax teams perform multiple complex state tax calculations with greater confidence, transparency, and efficiency.

Many tax departments still rely on sprawling spreadsheets to manage complex state tax calculations. As organizations grow, those manual processes become increasingly difficult to scale. Maintaining formulas across jurisdictions is time-consuming, increases the risk of errors, and pushes spreadsheets beyond what they’re designed to handle.  Controlled Calculations replaces those manual processes with a governed calculation environment that provides system-maintained tax rules, including general state apportionment rules, while allowing tax teams to customize calculations based on their specific business needs.

“The future of tax isn’t about building better spreadsheets, it’s about giving professionals better ways to navigate complexity,” said Evan Croen, head of Bloomberg Tax. “Controlled Calculations brings trusted tax intelligence, governed calculations, and connected workflows together so tax teams can spend less time maintaining formulas and more time applying their expertise.”

Unlike traditional spreadsheet-based processes, Controlled Calculations embeds system-maintained tax rules directly into the workflow while maintaining flexibility for organization-specific requirements. Built-in auditability provides visibility into every override, adjustment, and calculation throughout preparation and review.

Key capabilities include:

Governed state income tax calculations with system-maintained tax rulesFlexible support for organization-specific business logic and calculation structuresBuilt-in auditability and traceability throughout preparation and reviewConnected workflows across Bloomberg Tax Workpapers, Bloomberg Tax Research, and Bloomberg Tax ProvisionControlled Calculations expands Bloomberg Tax Workpapers as the operational hub of Bloomberg Tax’s Suite of Solutions, connecting trusted research, governed calculations, and tax provision in a unified workflow. Together, these capabilities help tax teams improve accuracy, reduce manual effort, and move from research to reporting with greater confidence.
